Khupe Welcomes Ramaphosa Envoy 'Snub'

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai (MDC-T) has welcomed the decision by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s envoy to defer a planned meeting to a future date saying that the South African President and President Emmerson Mnangagwa would resolve the issues in Zimbabwe.

MDC-T Acting Secretary for Information and Publicity Khaliphani Phugeni revealed that South African Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Phakhama Mbete, had earlier requested Khupe to meet the envoy on Monday but later informed her that the meeting will be held at a later date. Phugeni said in a statement:

On Saturday 8 August 2020, Acting President Dr Khupe, received a call from His Excellency Ambassador of South Africa Hon. Phakama Mbete.

In that call, the ambassador requested the availability of Dr Khupe and the Party (MDC-T) for a meeting with President Ramaphosa’s envoys on Monday 10 August 2020.

After meeting with His Excellency President E.D Mnangagwa, the South African ambassador H.E Mbete called Dr Khupe, to inform her that the meeting with President Ramaphosa’s envoys has been deferred to a future date.

As MDC-T we welcome this development and remain positive that the two leaders in President Ramaphosa and President Mnangagwa will get to the bottom of the issues bedevilling our beautiful nation and Zimbabwe will once again experience peace, unity love and harmony.

The Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance was also supposed to meet the envoy but was informed that the meeting will not be taking place when the envoy was already on its way back to South Africa. It is not yet clear why the envoy decided against meeting the opposition leaders.
