The High Court granted Spicer Takawira, who is suspected to have been part of a 10 member gang that robbed Mashwede Premises in Glen Norah in April, $250 000 bail after he failed to avail an immovable property as surety that he will attend trial to the court, The Herald report.
Takawira reportedly failed to provide the security needed by the court and his lawyer asked the court to increase his bail to $250 000.
In granting Takawira’s lawyer’s request, High Court Judge, Justice Chinamora said:
The increased amount of bail would counterbalance the risk. It is admittedly an unusually high amount, but using my discretion, I have decided to set the bail amount at $250 000 in the particular circumstances of this case.
Takawira who first made a bail application in May citing that his co-accused Cornwell Kasambarare, was granted bail by another judge was denied bail after the state successfully argued that his case was different from that of Kasambarare in that when police cornered him, Takawira sped off and was involved in a high-speed chase in Chitungwiza.
The armed robbers that pounced on Mashwede in April got away with US$100 000, a firearm and fuel coupons.
