Two Harare men, Norest Sasa (39) of Tafara, Mabvuku, and Clive Makofa of Old Tafara, Mabvuku, were arraigned before the Harare Magistrates’ Court, facing seven counts of robbery and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm.
The court heard on December 16, 2024, the accused robbed a Mukuru Money transfer booth at Glenview 2 Shopping Centre.
They allegedly fired gunshots, demanding money from the teller, who complied. They ordered the teller to open a cash box containing US$1,839 and R2,350, which they placed into a black satchel.
Sasa and Makofa then searched one of the clients and stole his brown wallet containing US$950 before escaping in their getaway vehicle, a Black Toyota Mark X, while firing shots into the air to disperse the crowd.
On December 20, 2024, the accused, using the same method, targeted another Mukuru Money Transfer booth at Kamunhu Shopping Centre in Mabvuku, making off with US$1,374 and R22,000.
Their crime spree continued as they robbed the Manyame Complex Mukuru Money Transfer booth, stealing US$5,030 and R18,700, and the Beatrice Mukuru booth in January 2025.
The case was remanded to January 29, 2025, and the accused were advised to seek bail at the High Court.

Two Robbers In Court After A String Of Mukuru Booth Heists

The Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) has uncovered a syndicate of dishonest businesses in Bindura’s central business district, Mashonaland Central Province, involved in repackaging low-quality, underweight sugar.
The sugar, weighing 1.6kg, was being falsely labelled as 2kg under the brands Star Brand and Sugar Pack, deceiving consumers and shortchanging them. The CPC stated:

These despicable pseudo businesspersons were caught during the ongoing Cabinet directed operation/blitz against business malpractice where CPC conducted inspections in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Trade Measures Department, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), the Zimbabwe Republic Police, and the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
Preliminary Intelligence information indicates that this business is a major supplier of illegally repacked sugar in the country.
The shop was subsequently closed, the sugar confiscated, and legal proceedings have been initiated against them.
So far during the ongoing operation, over ninety unscrupulous businesses were prosecuted, and those found guilty of serious offenses have been taken to court to answer to their charges.
Such actions constitute a clear violation of section 10 of the Consumer Protection Act (Chapter 14:44), which prohibits suppliers from selling or marketing any goods or services unless they meet the mandatory safety and quality standards as prescribed by law.

A group of dishonest shops in Bindura, Zimbabwe were caught selling fake 2kg sugar packs that actually only weighed 1.6kg, cheating customers. Seventeen people have been arrested for taking photographs with their smartphones at the scene of a road traffic accident in Harare.
The accident occurred on Wednesday morning at the busy intersection of Sam Nujoma Street and Robert Mugabe Road in central Harare, resulting in several injuries.
A commuter omnibus, attempting to overtake a City of Harare refuse compactor while evading arrest failed to complete the manoeuvre and collided with the vehicle, injuring several commuters.
Police arrested the individuals, who were taking pictures, and confiscated their cellphones.
The practice of recording and posting accident scenes on social media has become increasingly common.
In cases of serious injuries or fatalities, relatives and friends may learn about the tragedy through photos posted on social media before the police have had a chance to properly identify the victims and inform their next of kin.

Police Confiscate Phones, Arrest 17 For Photographing Harare Traffic Accident Scene

Shylock Zulu, a 28-year-old from Themba Ndlovu Homestead, Mashala Village in Hwange, was convicted of theft by the magistrates court.
He stole a goat, slaughtered it, and then sold the meat to the goat’s owner.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on January 8, 2025, Zulu took a black and white male goat belonging to Thabani Sibanda from the Mashala grazing area.
He then slaughtered the goat and went to Sibanda’s homestead, where he sold the meat for US$15, claiming it was bushbuck meat.
Sibanda became suspicious that the meat was from his missing goat.
Following an investigation, Zulu was sentenced to six months in prison, with three months suspended on the condition he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
The remaining three months were suspended on the condition that Zulu pay the restitution of ZiG1057 to the complainant.

A man named Shylock Zulu stole a goat and sold its meat to the owner, pretending it was bushbuck meat. The owner became suspicious and found out the truth. Zulu was caught and sentenced to six months in prison, but part of the sentence was suspended. He had to pay back the money he got from selling the meat. Zulu is not allowed to do a similar crime for the next five years.  So, it's never a good idea to steal and lie about what you're selling.

Man Steals Goat, Sells The Meat To Owner As Bushbuck

Two robbers were apprehended by members of the public in Mufakose, Harare, on Sunday after their victims cried out for help during the robbery.
According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the two suspects, Vincent Tabvirakare (41) and Peter Munyaradzi Runganga (35), had stolen US$400, over R1000, and cellphones from their victims before being captured. Police said:

The ZRP confirms the arrest of Vincent Tabvirakare (41) and Peter Munyaradzi Runganga (35) in connection with a case of robbery which occurred at a house in Mufakose, Harare on 12/01/25 in which US$400.00, ZAR1 050.00 cash and four cellphones were stolen.
The suspects were apprehended by the members of the public after the complainants shouted for help whilst the robbery was in progress.

Meanwhile, the ZRP is appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of two other suspects, only identified as Zindoga and Gumbura, who are currently being sought in connection with the robbery case.

In Mufakose, Harare, two robbers were caught by people while they were stealing US$400, over R1000, and cellphones. The victims shouted for help and the robbers were captured by the public. The police arrested the two suspects, Vincent Tabvirakare (41) and Peter Munyaradzi Runganga (35). They are looking for two other suspects, Zindoga and Gumbura. The police want information to catch them. The robbers were caught in the act of stealing thanks to the quick action of the people in the area who heard the victims shouting for help.

Heroic Mufakose Residents Capture Robbers Mid-Crime

Harare magistrate Taurai Manuwere on Monday dismissed an application by ZANU PF central committee member Mike Chimombe and his accomplice Moses Mpofu for refusal of further remand in a case involving serious allegations of fraud linked to a streetlight tender in Harare.
Chimombe and Mpofu are accused of submitting falsified documents to secure a US$9 million contract for the rehabilitation of streetlights.
In his ruling, Magistrate Manuwere said it was premature for the duo to make such an application and should allow the State sufficient time to prepare its case in accordance with the law.
Chimombe and Mpofu are being represented by lawyers Tapson Dzvetero and Arshiel Mugiya.
The court heard that in January 2024, the Harare City Council launched a streetlight rehabilitation project in preparation for the SADC summit.
The council invited bids, and 11 companies responded, including Juluka Endo Joint Venture (Pvt) Ltd, a company co-owned by Mpofu.
The tender invitation required all prospective bidders to provide stamped audited financial statements for the previous two years, as well as proof of payment for special procurement oversight committee and administration fees, among other conditions.
It is alleged that on April 19, 2024, an evaluation committee awarded contracts for eight lots to rehabilitate the streetlights.
However, Mpofu’s company failed to meet the requirements, as its audited financial statements lacked an audit opinion, a key prerequisite for bidding.
Despite this, the council invited Mpofu’s company to submit a revised bid, which allegedly contained falsified statements.
Mpofu is said to have misrepresented his company’s compliance with procurement regulations.
Court documents reveal that Mpofu submitted a bid security dated March 26, which had been used in a previous unsuccessful tender.
He also submitted audit documents that he claimed were prepared by three consultancy firms, but these companies were reportedly unregistered, according to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.
Mpofu’s company was eventually awarded the contract, with Chimombe allegedly signing as a witness. The duo reportedly received a part payment of US$260,000.
The case has been postponed to January 27 for routine remand.

Court Dismisses Chimombe And Mpofu Application In Streetlight Tender Fraud Case

High Court judge, Justice Never Katiyo, will on Tuesday, January 14, hear an application filed by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights on behalf of the Harare Residents’ Trust (HRT), over the government’s inaction in repairing defective flyovers posing a serious safety risk to residents of the capital city.
The residents filed the application at Harare High Court on February 15, 2024, seeking an order to compel Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona to rectify the defects on three of the city’s flyovers.
The flyovers are located along Simon Mazorodze Road, Lytton Road, and Fidel Castro Road, identified in a report dated July 27, 2012, as well as all other defects within 90 days of the court order to ensure the flyovers are safe for road users.
HRT also wants the High Court to declare that Minister Mhona’s failure to rectify the defects on the three flyovers violates residents’ right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being as enshrined in section 73(1)(a) of the Constitution.
Through the application, submitted by ZLHR’s Tonderai Bhatasara, HRT, along with Loreen Mupesa, a resident of Harare who frequently uses the roads on the flyovers, argued that as the official responsible for road maintenance and rehabilitation in Zimbabwe, Minister Mhona must safeguard people’s lives by ensuring roads are safe.
HRT and Mupesa protested that Minister Mhona had not addressed the defects, noted several years ago, exposing the flyovers to the risk of collapse and endangering public safety.
They argued that with each passing day, the flyovers became increasingly dangerous and unsafe to use.
According to HRT and Mupesa, the defects on the three flyovers were identified by officials from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and the City of Harare during a joint inspection, contained in a report produced on July 27, 2012.
The report listed defects such as spalling of concrete on bottom flanges of beams, severe corrosion to reinforcement steel, visible cracks along the centerline deck, severely damaged expansion joints, excessive vibration of the superstructure, poor drainage, water leaking on expansion joints, and longitudinal cracks.
HRT and Mupesa noted that while Minister Mhona’s ministry acknowledged the existence of the defects in 2021 and undertook to rectify them, the defects remain unfixed, compelling residents to seek the High Court’s intervention to eliminate the danger posed to motorists and other road users.

Harare Residents Sue Government Over Unsafe Flyovers

A man suspected to be part of a gang of armed robbers that targeted Mukuru Money Transfer agencies around Harare in recent weeks has been arrested.
According to <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/member-of-a-gang-of-armed-robbers-who-attacked-mukuru-money-transfer-booths-in-the-past-few-weeks-nabbed-he-says-he-will-plead-guilty-to-two-counts-of-armed-robberies/">H-Metro</a>, Clever Chada, from Stoneridge, appeared before Regional Magistrate Tilda Mazhande facing armed robbery charges. He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody.
Chada told the court that he would plead guilty to two of the robberies and a charge of illegal possession of explosives recovered from his car.
The alleged crimes date back to December 16, 2024, when Chada and his gang reportedly robbed the Mukuru Money Transfer booth at Glen View Shopping Centre.
They arrived in a black Toyota Mark X, parked outside the booth, and confronted the complainant, Tawanda Tagara, who was on duty. The robbers fired shots into the air and ordered everyone inside the booth to lie down.
They then threatened Tagara with firearms and demanded money, forcing him to open the cash box containing US$1,839 and R2,350, which they placed in a black satchel.
In addition, they searched client Proud Muchairi, stealing his brown wallet, which contained US$950, a driver’s license, and business cards, before making their escape, firing shots into the air.
Four days later, on December 20, the gang struck again at the Mukuru Money Transfer booth at Kamunhu Shopping Centre in Mabvuku.
The suspects, who were reportedly driving an unmarked silver Toyota Sienta, fired shots into the air and demanded cash from complainant Belinda Chapepura.
Despite her pressing the panic button linked to Safeguard Rapid Response, the robbers continued their attack, threatening to shoot her. She complied, handing over US$1,374 and R22,000 before they escaped.
On January 3, the gang targeted the Mukuru Money Transfer booth at Manyame Complex. Armed with pistols, they demanded money from employees Munyaradzi Rusere and Sarafina Banda, threatening them with death.
After stealing two cash boxes containing US$5,530 and R18,700, they confronted Sarudzai Pupajena, an EcoCash operator, and stole US$680 in cash and a G-Tel cell phone. The gang fired a shot into the air before fleeing the scene.
The gang’s final known robbery occurred on Saturday at a Mukuru Money Transfer booth in Beatrice. After attacking tellers Simbarashe Mutirandwa and Tatenda Walter Muchenje, one gang member drew a pistol and demanded the booth’s door keys.
The robbers stole US$3,500, ransacked the booth for other valuables, and took two Mukuru cell phones, as well as the teller’s Samsung A35 cellphone. They locked the two tellers in the booth before escaping.
Chada was arrested after police received a tip-off. Upon searching his car, they discovered three Thunder T90 explosive dynamites, one Emex explosive dynamite, and detonator cables, all without a valid license for possession.

A man named Clever Chada from Harare has been arrested for robbing Mukuru Money Transfer booths with his gang. Chada plans to plead guilty to two robberies. The gang stole money and threatened employees with guns at multiple locations. Chada had explosives in his car when he was arrested. He is facing charges of armed robbery and illegal possession of explosives. Chada was caught after a tip-off to the police.

Harare Man To Plead Guilty To Robbing Two Mukuru Booths

Illegal miners, commonly known as zama zamas in South Africa, who were arrested after being rescued from disused mines in Stilfontein, North West, have appeared in court and received wholly suspended sentences.
As reported by <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/north-west/stilfontein-miners-deported-to-neighbouring-countries-after-getting-wholly-suspended-sentences-105bec57-ff0b-4bca-93a3-9e00bf5ec966">IOL</a>, the second group of illegal miners was sentenced at the Stilfontein Magistrate’s Court on December 31 for illicit mining and violating the Immigration Act.
According to North West provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, the accused include 10 Lesotho nationals, four Mozambicans, and five Zimbabwean undocumented migrants, aged between 20 and 43.
Each of the accused was sentenced to six months in prison or a R12,000 fine for illegal mining. These sentences are suspended for five years, provided they are not convicted of illegal mining during this period.
Additionally, the miners were sentenced to three months in prison or a R6,000 fine for violating South Africa’s Immigration Act, with this sentence also suspended for five years on the condition of no further violations. Said Mokgwabone:

Following the sentences, the accused were on January 7, 2025, deported to their countries of origin by the Department of Home Affairs. The accused were arrested at Margaret Shaft where they resurfaced in November 2024.

Meanwhile, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, has welcomed the conviction and subsequent deportation of the zama zamas.
Asaneng reiterated that the ongoing “Vala Umgodi” operation will continue to ensure that those who commit crimes are held accountable in accordance with the law.

Illegal miners called "zama zamas" in South Africa were rescued from abandoned mines in Stilfontein, North West. They got suspended sentences in court for illegal mining and breaking immigration laws. Five of them, from Zimbabwe, were deported back to their country. The sentences are "stopped" for five years if they don't do more illegal mining. The police will keep working to catch people who break the rules. The Acting Police Commissioner in North West is glad these miners were caught and sent away. The operation to catch criminals will keep going.

Five "Zama Zamas" Deported To Zimbabwe After Getting Wholly Suspended Sentences

A 25-year-old woman from Triangle in the South East Lowveld has been charged with murder after allegedly throwing her two young daughters into a water canal before attempting suicide last week.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Blessing Chiromonye was arraigned before the Chiredzi Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was remanded in custody to January 23, 2025. Said the NPA:

Allegations are that, on the 8th January 2025, the accused threw her two daughters aged 4 and 8 into the main water canal, Triangle, resulting in their drowning and death. 
The accused person tried to commit suicide by jumping into the canal but was thrown out by the water. She went home and changed her wet clothes and tried to flee. 
The driver of the commuter omnibus she took was tipped about what had transpired and drove the accused person back. A police report was made, leading to her arrest.
</blockquote>
In an earlier statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said Chiromonyo took her daughters—aged three and seven—and jumped into the canal.
The children were swept away by the strong current, tragically drowning, while Chiromonyo was able to escape from the water unharmed.
Investigations by the Police established that the incident occurred after Chiromonyo had accused her husband of infidelity.

A woman named Blessing Chiromonye has been accused of throwing her two daughters, aged 4 and 8, into a canal, causing their deaths. She tried to commit suicide but was stopped by the water. She changed clothes and tried to run away, but the driver of the bus she took brought her back. The police arrested her. Earlier, she had jumped into the canal with her other two daughters, aged 3 and 7, because she accused her husband of cheating. She survived, but the children drowned. Chiromonye is now in custody, waiting for a court date in January 2025.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) seized goods worth R500,000 bound for Zimbabwe on Saturday after they were abandoned on the banks of the Limpopo River.
In a media statement released late Sunday afternoon, SAPS confirmed that upon noticing police presence, the smugglers abandoned their inflatable boats and fled.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Operation Vala Umgodi National Intervention (Roving) Team has successfully thwarted a major smuggling operation along the Limpopo River, in the Musina policing area leading to the confiscation of goods valued at approximately R500,000.
On the morning of 11 January 2025, at around 11:20 AM, the team was conducting a routine patrol near Tshiurundu village when they received a tip-off about approximately eight (08) small boats loading goods.
Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects quickly got into the boats and fled back into Zimbabwe, abandoning most of the goods behind.
The confiscated items, which were likely being smuggled across the border, include alcoholic beverages, energy drinks, baked goods, flour, and other consumer goods, along with a chest fridge.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the team for their swift and decisive action, noting that the success of the operation highlights the SAPS’s ongoing commitment to combating cross-border crimes and illegal trade activities.
All seized items have been registered at the Musina SAPS for further investigation and processing.

Zimbabwean Smugglers Flee South African Police Leaving Behind Contraband Worth R500,000 Along Limpopo River

Police in Harare are seeking information to help identify members of a mob involved in the fatal assault of an intruder in Budiriro suburb on Friday morning.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the victim, identified only as Honest, was caught by the mob after breaking into a house and “grabbing” a 19-year-old woman who was asleep in her bedroom around 3 AM.
The woman screamed for help, alerting neighbours who rushed to the scene and apprehended Honest before he could flee.
The mob then attacked Honest with wooden logs, leaving him severely injured. He later succumbed to his wounds. The police statement reads:

Police in Harare are investigating a case of murder which occurred along Gunguwo Street, Budiriro, Harare on 10/01/25 at around 0300 hours in which a victim only identified as Honest died.
The victim was apprehended by a mob on allegations of unlawful entry into premises where he allegedly grabbed the complainant (19) who was sleeping in her bedroom, at a house in Budiriro 5B, Harare.
The mob assaulted the victim using wooden logs indiscriminately and left him for dead. The victim succumbed to the injuries.
The body of the victim was taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for post mortem.

Police are also working to determine the motive behind the unlawful entry, as it appears the woman may have been targeted for sexual assault or robbery.

ZRP Seeks Leads On Fatal Mob Attack On Intruder In Budiriro

A Gwanda-based magistrate, Talent Phiri, has been sentenced to an efffective five years in prison after soliciting a bribe of US$3,000 from a businessman, reported <a href="https://bmetro.co.zw/us3-000-bribe-seeking-magistrate-jailed-five-years/">B-Metro</a>.
The trial was conducted by Harare regional magistrate Farai Gwitima at the Tredgold Magistrates Court in Bulawayo.
Phiri, 35, from Mount Cazalet suburb, pleaded not guilty to the charge of criminal abuse of duty as a public officer.
However, he was ultimately convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison, with two years suspended on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years. Additionally, he was ordered to return the bribe amount he received.
Gwitima presided over the case after Bulawayo magistrates recused themselves.
In delivering the sentence, Gwitima stressed the urgent need to combat the rampant corruption that has become a pervasive issue throughout the country.
He underscored the responsibility of the courts to take a stand against such misconduct and restore integrity within public service. Said the magistrate:

Members of the judiciary must honor their public offices and must not solicit gifts or bribes. The aggravating factors far outweigh the mitigating factors in this case.
</blockquote>
Gwitima said that all witnesses provided substantial evidence, and the offender was caught red-handed, which led to the guilty verdict.
In mitigation, Phiri’s lawyer, Prince Butshe Dube from Mathonsi Ncube Law Chambers, urged for a lenient sentence.
He said Phiri was a first-time offender who had already lost his job and was the sole breadwinner for his wife and three children.
Prosecuting, Acumen Khupe, informed the court that the offense occurred after Phiri granted an interim protection order to Qiniso Ncube against her former husband, Lungisani “Two Minutes” Ncube, on August 27 2024. A warrant of arrest for Ncube was attached to the protection order.
On September 4, Phiri called Ncube, claiming he wanted to assist him in his domestic violence case.
He falsely alleged that officers from the President’s Office, police, and the National Prosecuting Authority were involved and demanded a US$3,000 bribe to prevent Ncube from being jailed.
Ncube informed Phiri that he would try to raise the money, but Phiri persistently called to demand it.
During their conversations, Ncube negotiated the amount down to US$2,500 and was instructed to deliver the money to Phiri’s residence the next morning.
Ncube reported the matter to the police, providing audio recordings of his conversations with Phiri.
A sting operation was set up, and the following morning, police accompanied Ncube to his meeting with Phiri.
Phiri was arrested after accepting the trap money, which was found in the right pocket of his boxer shorts.
In his closing arguments, Khupe highlighted the severity of Phiri’s actions, saying Phiri abused his position as a judicial officer, exploiting court proceedings for personal gain.
He said such conduct erodes public confidence in the justice system and warrants a fitting sentence.

Gwanda Magistrate Sentenced To Seven Years For Soliciting US$3,000 Bribe

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed two chilling murder cases that unfolded over the weekend, evoking shock and horror in the community.
In separate incidents, a father beheaded his son, and a man was killed over a pot containing sadza and chicken.
In the first case, a 32-year-old man from Daakoni Village in Buhera faces murder charges after allegedly beheading his 11-year-old son on Friday.
Tawanda Magoso reportedly returned home from a shrine where he had gone for prayers, retrieved an axe from his bedroom, and attacked his son.
The community rallied together, apprehending Magoso and escorting him to the local police station. Said the ZRP:

The ZRP reports that Tawanda Magoso (32) was arrested in connection with a case of murder which occurred at his house in Daakoni Village, Buhera on 10/01/25 in which his son, Taonga Magoso (11) died. 
The suspect allegedly returned home from a shrine where he had gone for prayers and took an axe from his bedroom which he used to strike the victim indiscriminately all over the body.
The victim’s head separated from its torso and sustained multiple injuries on the back. Resultantly, the victim succumbed to the injuries.
The suspect was later apprehended with the help of members of the community.

The second case occurred the following day in Village Midzi, Masvingo, where 41-year-old Makneme Chikutuva was arrested in connection with the murder of 42-year-old Maxwell Manjonjo.
Chikutuva allegedly assaulted Manjonjo with ox yoke leather straps after accusing him of stealing a pot filled with sadza and chicken.
When Chikutuva noticed that Manjonjo was struggling to breathe, he callously carried him to Musingarahwi Business Centre and abandoned him there.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has also launched a manhunt for Takunda Gwitira, who is also being sought in connection with the murder case.

Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at a financial institution in Beatrice on Saturday morning.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is appealing for information that could help apprehend the culprits.
According to a statement from the ZRP, three unidentified male suspects, armed with pistols and wearing face masks, seized keys from the teller at the booth.
They forcibly took US$3,500 in cash and three cellphones before locking the teller in the booth and making their escape in a silver-grey Toyota Sienta.
Police are urging anyone with information about the robbery to come forward. Said the ZRP:

The ZRP is investigating a case of robbery which occurred at Beatrice Township, Beatrice on 11/01/25 at around 0900 hours.
Three unidentified male suspect who were armed with pistols and wearing face masks, pounced at a local financial institution and demanded keys to the booth from the teller.

The suspects locked the teller into the booth before driving away in a Silver Grey Toyota Sienta with no vehicle registration number plates.
Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station.

A 25-year-old woman from Masvingo has been arrested for allegedly drowning her two daughters in a water canal on Wednesday, following a dispute with her husband.
According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the suspect, Blessing Chiromonyo, took her daughters—aged three and seven—and jumped into the canal.
The children were swept away by the strong current, tragically drowning, while Chiromonyo was able to escape from the water unharmed. Police said:

Police in Masvingo arrested, Blessing Chiromonyo (25) for murder which occurred at a water canal at Section 4, Triangle on 08/01/25.
The suspect got hold of her two daughters aged three and seven before diving into the water canal.
The children drowned after being swept away by water while the suspect managed to get out of the canal unhurt.
Investigations by the Police established that the incident occurred after the suspect had accused her husband of infidelity.

Chiromonyo is now facing two counts of murder, each stemming from the tragic deaths of her daughters. If convicted, she could face a lengthy prison sentence.

Four Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) officials—Revenue Officers identified as Maguta, Mitwira, Homera, and Gwatirinda—were arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for allegedly extorting a transport operator.
The ZIMRA officials are accused of demanding a US$6,000 bribe from Beatrice Maramwidze, a director at Best Express Logistics, to release a company bus impounded during an anti-smuggling operation.
Despite Best Express Logistics paying the ZiG 55,000 customs duty, the officials demanded a bribe to release the bus from BAK Storage in Harare.
Following a ZACC undercover investigation triggered by Maramwidze’s report, the officials were apprehended in a ZIMRA vehicle after accepting a US$1,500 bribe.
A subsequent search revealed an additional US$3,951, suspected to be proceeds from further extortion.
The suspects are being held at Avondale Police Station and are scheduled to appear in Harare Magistrates’ Court on Friday, January 11, 2025.

ZACC Arrests Four ZIMRA Officials For Extortion

A Bulawayo farmer is facing a culpable homicide charge after accidentally running over an eight-month-old infant with his vehicle.
The tragic accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at a Glengarry plot when the farmer reversed his vehicle, striking Amathe Shumba who was sleeping on the grass nearby.
Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, acting spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Bulawayo Province, confirmed the incident.
The child, from a neighbouring plot, was left sleeping by her mother while the mother worked harvesting tomatoes. Said Msebele:

Circumstances are that on January 7 at 1 PM, a male adult aged 52 years, who is a farmer, came and parked his vehicle at his plot, where he was harvesting tomatoes.
Amathe Shumba, from the neighbouring plot, was left by her mother sleeping on the grass approximately five metres from the vehicle as she was doing a piece job harvesting tomatoes at that plot.

Msebele said the driver did not notice the baby who was sleeping, started his vehicle and then reversed, thereby running over the infant. She added:

The infant sustained serious head injuries as well as bruises on the stomach and was taken to UBH [United Bulawayo Hospital], where she died upon admission.
</blockquote>
Police charged the farmer with culpable homicide, alleging he failed to maintain a proper lookout, resulting in the accidental death of the infant.
Culpable homicide is the unlawful killing of a human being without malice aforethought; it’s an unlawful killing without premeditation or intent to kill.

A farmer accidentally ran over a baby with his car, killing her. The baby was left sleeping by her mother while she worked. The farmer didn't see the baby, started his car, and ran over her. The baby had serious injuries and died in the hospital. The farmer was charged with culpable homicide for not being careful. Culpable homicide means accidentally killing someone without intending to. It's a very sad accident.

Driver Charged With Culpable Homicide After Infant Dies In Reversing Accident

A Chinhoyi magistrate, Kudzanai Mahaso, blocked a Zvimba headman, Tinos Manongovere, from inspecting the gravesite of former President Robert Mugabe, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200036792/battle-over-mugabe-remains-in-new-twist">NewsDay</a>.
Manongovere’s request for an “inspection in loco” was opposed by Mugabe’s children, Bona, Robert Jr., and Bellarmine Chatunga, who argued the application lacked procedural and substantive compliance.
In a December 20, 2024 ruling, Magistrate Mahaso noted the children’s opposition. The magistrate subsequently granted Manongovere leave to file a response to this opposition, with a deadline of December 31, 2024. Said Mahaso:

Unfortunately, nothing was filed of record in response. Be that as it may, I am constrained to make a ruling on the application based on the papers filed of record.
</blockquote>
Manongovere argued that Mugabe’s burial inside a house violated Zvimba traditions and customs, asserting that an on-site inspection (“inspection in loco”) was essential to resolving this factual dispute. Said Mahaso:
<blockquote>
According to the respondent, the basis of the application is to enable the court to observe real evidence in addition to oral evidence and ascertain whether or not the late former president was buried inside a house or not.
Following the application filed by the respondent, the appellants raised a preliminary objection to the effect that the application for the inspection in loco is defective…
An inspection in loco remains at the discretion of the court. It is not automatic that when a litigant requests for an inspection, such an application is granted.
There are no factual nor legal reasons established by the appellant to show that the judicial officer had predetermined the matter simply because she dismissed an application for an inspection in loco.
An inspection in loco is, indeed, at the discretion of the court. It should be noted that the previous inspection in loco was not done at a private property.
</blockquote>
Last month, the court visited the empty mausoleum at the National Heroes Acre, intended for Mugabe’s burial.
Magistrate Mahaso noted that Manongovere’s request for an “inspection in loco” pertained to a private residence, not a public site. He said:
<blockquote>
This, in my view, should be conducted with the full consent of the property owner in order not to infringe property rights.
Such an infringement may cause undue prejudice to the appellants.
This is so because entering someone’s property without permission amounts to trespass.
In any event, there are alternative means of obtaining such evidence, for example, through evidence from witnesses in order to resolve the factual dispute.
I also wish to add that inasmuch as the inspection in loco may be germane to the resolution of a factual dispute, the right to privacy is fundamental and ought to be respected.

A granddaughter of a landlord in Warren Park 1, Harare, has been arraigned before Harare regional magistrate Tilda Mazhande on charges of aggravated indecent assault.
As reported by <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/landlords-granddaughter-sexually-abuses-10-year-old-schoolboy/">H-Metro</a>, Fadzai Chimboza allegedly forced herself on a ten-year-old schoolboy on multiple occasions.
The magistrate did not ask Chimboza to plead and remanded her in custody until January 29. As she is facing a third schedule offence, she was advised to approach the High Court for bail considerations.
The court heard that Chimboza is the granddaughter of the landlord of the house where the boy lives with his parents.
It is alleged that in April 2024, the boy returned from school when Chimboza pulled him into her room, removed his clothes, and told him to lie on the bed. 
When he asked her to stop, she allegedly responded, “ndinoda kukuita zvisina kukwana,” and forced herself on him. She allegedly repeated this act several times thereafter.
The matter came to light on December 19 2024 when the boy told his cousin that he had sexual intercourse with his girlfriend, and his mother overheard him.
A police report of aggravated indecent assault was made, leading to Chimboza’s arrest.

Landlord's Granddaughter "Rapes" Tenant's Ten-Year-Old Son

A 42-year-old man from Chief Hikwa’s area in Dombodema, Plumtree, has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Plumtree Magistrates’ Court for the rape and subsequent impregnation of his biological daughter.
The crime occurred in 2013 when the daughter was just 13 years old. According to a statement released by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Thursday, January 9, the man repeatedly raped his daughter.
She subsequently fled their home and relocated to Botswana while pregnant as a result of the abuse. Said the NPA:

The complainant is the offender’s biological daughter, she was 13 at the time of the commission of the crime.
Sometime in 2013, the accused person, his wife and the complainant were sleeping in the same room.
One night, the accused person took advantage of his wife’s absence and disembarked from his bed, went to the complainant’s bedding and raped her.
He threatened the complainant by saying that, if she reported him she would lose a breadwinner. He, therefore, repeatedly raped her and she fell pregnant.
The accused person continued to rape the accused person during her pregnancy. The complainant fled from home after giving birth in 2016 and went to Botswana.
</blockquote>
The NPA statement further details that the complainant returned home in December 2024 with her now eight-year-old daughter.
Driven by fears that her daughter might also become a victim of abuse, the complainant filed a police report, resulting in her father’s arrest.

Plumtree Man Sentenced To 20 Years In Jail For Raping, Impregnating 13-Year-Old Daughter

Timothy Chiminya, who claims to be “King Munhumutapa” with supposed powers to appoint and dethrone chiefs in Zimbabwe, was denied bail by Harare Magistrate Isheunesu Matova on Wednesday.
As reported by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/fake-king-munhumutapa-denied-bail/">The Herald</a>, Matova ruled that Chiminya posed a potential threat to national peace and stability, remanding him in custody until January 22, 2024.
Medical reports presented in court confirmed that Chiminya is mentally fit to stand trial. Prosecutors had earlier requested a mental examination to determine his fitness before proceeding with the bail hearing.
Chiminya, arrested on 16 December 2024, faces charges of undermining the authority of the President. He allegedly claims that he was appointed “King Munhumutapa” by a spirit medium, granting him the authority to install and remove traditional chiefs. Prosecutors argue that his self-proclaimed powers have caused unrest in some communities.
The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works filed a complaint against Chiminya, leading to his arrest.
Prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi told the court that in February, Chiminya visited Chief Seke’s homestead in Dema and informed him that he had been “dethroned,” subsequently declaring Masimba Rubatika as the new Chief Seke.
Between June 11 and October 31, Chiminya is accused of appointing three more chiefs in Chirumhanzu and Zaka without legal authority.
The chiefs are Julius Chimbi as Chief Chigwegwe, Hama Piki as another chief in Chirumanzu, and Chief Nyakunhuwa in Zaka, Masvingo.
Chief Chimanike, the traditional Chief Seke, reported Chiminya’s actions to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works in June.
The prosecution argued that Chiminya’s actions violated both the Zimbabwean Constitution and the Traditional Leaders Act, which exclusively grants the President the authority to appoint and remove chiefs.
The title Munhumutapa (or Mwenemutapa) was used by the rulers of the Kingdom of Mutapa, also known as the Mutapa Empire.
This kingdom, which existed from around 1430 to 1760, was located in what is now Zimbabwe and expanded into parts of Mozambique, Botswana, Malawi, and Zambia.
The title Munhumutapa means “he who conquers” or “owner of the conquered land,” reflecting the kingdom’s expansionist nature.

A man named Timothy Chiminya who claims to be a king in Zimbabwe was denied bail because he threatened national peace. He says he can appoint and remove chiefs, but prosecutors say he caused trouble. He claims he was made king by a spirit, but the government says only the President can appoint chiefs. He faces charges and will stay in custody until 2024. Chiminya visited chiefs and claimed he had the power to remove them and appoint new chiefs without permission. This caused problems and the government got involved.

"King Munhumutapa" Denied Bail

The High Court on Wednesday blocked Sengezo Tshabangu from making changes to the Citizens Coalition for Change’s (CCC) parliamentary leadership, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200036764/high-court-floors-tshabangu">reported ZimLive</a>.
Justice Neville Wamambo of the Harare High Court made this ruling after CCC acting president Welshman Ncube filed an urgent application.
Ncube argued that Tshabangu did not have the authority to reassign MPs and was carrying out back-door recalls, which he was previously barred from doing by an earlier High Court judgment.
The judge agreed with Ncube and said Tshabangu’s decision to remove Lynette Karenyi Kore, Sessel Zvidzai, and Edwin Mushoriwa from the parliamentary Committee on Standing Rules and Orders (CSRO) amounted to recalls.
The judge also noted that the position of opposition chief whip, to which Tshabangu appointed Nonhlanhla Mlotshwa, did not exist under Zimbabwe’s constitution.
Ncube told the High Court that there seemed to be collusion between Tshabangu and Speaker Jacob Mudenda, who readily implemented the changes, ignoring the party’s objections.
Ncube also said that by appointing himself as the overall leader of the opposition in parliament, Tshabangu had placed himself above his seniors in the party hierarchy, compromising the party’s organisational integrity.
Justice Wamambo granted an interim order sought by Ncube, reversing the changes announced by Tshabangu last month. The judge ruled:

Applicants place reliance on the Chitapi J judgment and interpret it to import that first respondent is effectively barred from recalling or purporting to issue any letter of recall.
Further that the reshuffle in this case amounts to a recall ‘literally and at law.
The argument by applicants is that the office bearers held office in the CSRO but no longer hold such office which amounts to a recall. I also find that the position of chief whip is not sanctioned by the constitution and is thus unlawful.
I agree that removing members from the CSRO and replacing them with others amounts to a recall. Effectively, first respondent disobeyed the order rendered in HH 652/23.
In the totality of the circumstances, I find that the application is meritorious and should be granted.

Tshabangu, claiming to be the party’s interim secretary-general, has recalled over a hundred councillors and dozens of MPs and senators since the August 2023 general elections.
In October 2023, the CCC filed a court application (case number HC 6872/23) arguing that Tshabangu had no authority to make these recalls, which led to by-elections. This case is still pending.
The CCC then obtained an order from Justice Tawanda Chitapi, preventing Tshabangu from making any further recalls until it is determined whether he had the legal basis to initiate the recalls in the first place. This order is the basis for Ncube’s current application.

The High Court stopped Sengezo Tshabangu from changing the CCC's leaders in Parliament. This was because Tshabangu was recalled from making changes by an earlier court ruling. The judge agreed that Tshabangu's actions were like recalls. Tshabangu appointed Nonhlanhla Mlotshwa as chief whip, but this position does not exist in the country's laws. The court granted an order to reverse Tshabangu's changes. Tshabangu has already recalled many MPs and councillors, and there is another pending case questioning his authority to do so.

High Court Blocks Tshabangu From Reassigning CCC MPs In Parliament

Thieves broke into a company in Kelvin West, Bulawayo, on Monday night and stole a Chubb safe containing US$10,569.
The safe was found the following day along a stream bank, with the cash still inside.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the thieves broke a window pane to gain entry into the company’s cash office.
The suspects loaded the Chubb safe onto a Jack trolley and made their escape. Police later tracked the trolley marks and recovered the safe and cash along a stream bank near a beer outlet in Tshabalala. The statement reads:

The ZRP is investigating a case of unlawful entry into premises and theft which occurred at a company in Kelvin West, Bulawayo during the night on 06/01/25.

On 07/01/25, Police in Bulawayo tracked the trolley marks and recovered the safe and US$10 569.00 along a stream bank near a beer outlet in Tshabalala. The suspects are on the run.

An administrator at Shalom Church, Westlea Assembly, allegedly stole over US$21,000 in tithes and offerings after being instructed to deposit the money into the church’s bank account.
<a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/church-admin-steals-us21k-tithes-offerings/">H-Metro</a> reported that the administrator, Chipo Molly Machokonera, appeared before Harare magistrate Isheanesu Matova on Monday, where she was not asked to plead.
Prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi told the court that between January 1, 2023, and December 10, 2024, Machokonera was employed by the church as an administrative secretary.
Her duties included receiving and recording tithes and offerings from congregants and banking part of the money.
It is alleged that Machokonera took advantage of her position and diverted US$21,904 for her personal use.
She then misrepresented the deposits to the church by providing fake deposit slips, purporting that the money had been deposited at Steward Bank Joina City Branch in Harare, and forwarded the slips to the pastor.
The court heard that on December 10, the pastor requested a bank statement from Steward Bank, discovering that the money Machokonera claimed to have deposited was not accounted for.
He then called for an internal audit, which revealed the offence, leading to a police report and her subsequent arrest.
The total value stolen is US$21,904, and nothing has been recovered.

Instead of banking the fees, most schools keep the cash in their safes, leading to armed robberies involving guns, machetes, and iron bars as schools reopen and parents pay fees.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/dont-store-large-amounts-of-cash-schools-warned/">The Herald</a>, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged schools to improve security measures on their premises and to deposit cash in financial institutions. Said Nyathi:

In one incident, six men posing as parents at Warren Park 3 Primary School in Harare pointed a pistol at the headmaster and made off with US$1,500.
Another robbery at Sacred Heart College in Gweru saw five armed robbers stealing a substantial sum of US$15,886.
In Masvingo, a lone armed robber posing as a prospective parent for a Form 1 pupil stole over US$22,800 at gunpoint, along with two cellphones and two laptops.
A robbery at Lomagundi College in Chinhoyi involved 10 robbers attacking a security guard and the deputy head, stealing cash, a pistol, laptops, cellphones, and a Mazda Tribute vehicle. The robbers even blew open a safe containing the cash.

Harare Man (32) Stoned To Death Over Gay Taunt

Police in Bulawayo have advised the public to adopt target-hardening techniques to secure their homes and utilize the house-under-supervision scheme available at all police stations in the country.
The call was made by Acting Spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Bulawayo Province, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, following the arrests of two men, John Chari (34) and Ntandoyenkosi Mpofu (24), both from Matshobane, Bulawayo, in connection with a case of unlawful entry and theft.
According to Msebele, sometime in August 2024, the complainant, a 57-year-old male from Matshobane, left his house to visit his rural home in Plumtree.
He allegedly left his property under the custody of a caretaker, who was responsible for checking the house twice a week but was not residing there. Said Msebele (via <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/adopt-target-hardening-techniques-police-urge-public/">Chronicle</a>):

On 02 January 2025 at around 0300 hours, the two accused persons proceeded to the complainant’s place of residence and forcibly opened the backdoor and gained entry into the house.
Whilst in the house the accused persons stole various household properties which included TVs, gas cylinders, laptops, suitcases and speakers.

Chari and Mpofu allegedly used an unknown motor vehicle to transport the stolen property, which they then divided among themselves and kept at their respective residences.
Msebele said on the same day, the police received information about the accused’s whereabouts. Acting on the tip-off, they arrested Chari, who during the interview implicated Mpofu. This led to the recovery of some of the stolen property at their residences.
The complainant was notified and positively identified his property. The total value of the stolen items was estimated at US$7,000, with US$5,800 worth of property recovered. She added:
