Mafume: Our Mandate Is To Turn Harare Into A Smart City

Newly-elected Harare mayor Jacob Mafume said he will carry on with the work the MDC Alliance-dominated council started when it was elected in 2018.

The Mt Pleasant Ward 17 Councillor won against Luckson Mukunguma of Ward 25 (Highfield) during an election held at Town House on Thursday afternoon.

Mafume asserted that the Council will prioritise delivering services for Harare residents and turn the Capital into a smart city. He said:

When we were elected a few years ago, the mandate is still the same, we were elected on a smart policy to turn Harare into a smart city.

We are behind schedule, the residents want to see us deliver, and the residents are not interested in the round-robin of politics where we take turns to replace each other.

… The residents require, water, good roads, proper services and that we are orderly in our conduct.

Mafume added that there will be no room for corruption under his watch. He said:

We have to be corruption free, avoid the temptations that come with office, avoid quarrelling with each other.

… We shall try and put the residents at the centre of our efforts and that there are no sacred cows, if we cannot deliver, there will be consequences to pay.

We will try to work together and see that we avoid the pitfalls of the dramatics politics of the day and hope that there will be stability at Town House.

The election was held after the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T expelled Herbert Gomba, who refused to swear his allegiance to the judicially-constructed party.
