SACU Charges Mafume With Criminal Abuse Of Office

President Mnangagwa’s Special Anti Corruption Unit which apprehended Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume yesterday is reportedly charging him with criminal abuse of office for alleged allocation of two residential stands in Westlea without following due process, New Zimbabwe reports.

This was revealed by Mafume’s lawyer Tonderai Bhatasara who said:

He was picked by SACU today (Wednesday) and is detained at Rhodesville Police Station. He will appear in court tomorrow (Thursday).

SACU is alleging that Mafume influenced the Harare City Council housing director to allocate at least two residential stands in Westlea sometime in March 2020

The MDC said the Prosecution of Mafume was just to frustrate the opposition in a statement that stated that:

In yet another case of persecution and weaponization of the law against MDC Alliance members, Harare Mayor [Jacob Mafume] has been arrested by [ZRP]. The charges against him are unclear.

We know that his real offence was winning the mayoral vote for the MDC Alliance. The toxic politics of Zanu PF is aimed at persecuting those who openly display allegiance with President [Nelson Chamisa].

They want to remove him and replace him with a Zanu PF proxy.

SACU which is headed by a man alleged to be President Mnangagwa’s nephew Tabani Vusa Mpofu has been headlining for various reasons. Last month they stormed a full council meeting and detailed people in attendance including journalists.
