Batoka Hydro-Electric Scheme Project Expected To Create 10 000 Jobs - Report

The Batoka Hydro-Electric Scheme project is expected to create 10 000 direct and indirect jobs and other mutual socio-economic mutual benefits between Zambia and Zimbabwe according to the Zambezi River Authority(ZRA), ZBC News reports.

This was revealed by ZRA Director Water Resources and Management Engineer Christopher Chisenze who said they were projecting 4000 direct jobs  and 6000 indirect jobs will be created on the project:

A lot of the submissions we received points to the issues of employment. As ZRA and our implementing partners we are going to make sure that the locals are getting the maximum benefits from the employment opportunity

Additionally, ZRA is lobbying for the contractor to award at least  20% of the total project value to the local contractors. The $4.5 billion Batoka Hydro-electric project which will generate 2400MW is expected to start in the last quarter of 2021.
