'Mwonzora's Rivals Tried To Have Him Arrested Before Congress'

MDC-T acting secretary-general and presidential hopeful Douglas Mwonzora said allegations made by the deputy treasurer-general Chief Ndlovu that he [Mwonzora] cleaned the party’s bank account of US$60 000 are meant to jeopardise his chances of winning.

Speaking to reporters at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on Sunday where the party will elect a substantive president, Mwonzora also claimed that his rivals wanted him to be arrested. He said:

That is coming from other candidates who are afraid of competition. Those allegations are false, malicious, and calculated to affect my chances of [winning].

I know for certain that today they went to the police trying to cause an arrest. That is the type of politics that we will get rid of today… the politics of hate, the politics of mudslinging, the politics of trying to pull other people down.

There is no way an MDC account can be withdrawn by one person, it stands to reason. So everything is there, the breakdown was done.

I have seen something written by Chief Ndlovu and I have responded to it. Chief Ndlovu mistakes the duty of secretary-general to that of a cashier.

The MDC-T presidential candidates include acting president Thokozani Khupe, Mwonzora, Elias Mudzuri and Morgen Komichi.
