DRC President Felix Tshisekedi Becomes The New AU Chairman

DRC’s President Felix Tshisekedi is now the official Africa Union Chairperson after South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa‘s tenure expired.

According to ENCA, Institute for Security Studies Researcher, Dr Mohamed Diatta said Tshisekedi is taking over from  Ramaphosa during a very difficult time as the continent is battling a ravaging pandemic that has affected economies:

The work of the chairperson of the AU is really about representing the continent around driving the continental agenda.

When it comes to security, he cannot do anything on his own. There are mechanism that needs to be involved, which is tasked to assisting in making decisions that are binding.

So Tshisekedi will have to work through the Peace and Security Council of the AU, through the AU Commission and other bodies that are task to take charge of issues ….all of these setups are supposed to be working together and perhaps receive some kind of motivation or guidance from the chairperson of the AU.

Felix Tshisekedi who will be sworn in today in Addis Ababa is already saying the right words as he said he wants Africa to be a self sufficient continent and the current pandemic should be used to re examine re-examine the continent’s socio-economic priorities and work towards inclusive economic growth.
