Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Jailed For Corruption

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was today sentenced to2  years in jail for corruption after he was found guilty for trying to bribe a magistrate in exchange for information, BBC News reports.

Sarkozy who was convicted together with his 2 associate Thierry Herzog who was Sarkozy’s ex-lawyer and Gilbert Azibert will serve the sentence at his home but he is expected to go on trial from 17 March to 15 April as he is facing charges of overspending during his presidential campaign in 2012 in which he lost.

BBC stated that the case in which Sarkozy was found guilt on was emanating from conversations in which Sarkozy reportedly offered Azibert a high paying job in exchange for information on the criminal inquiry into his political party:

The case centred on conversations between Azibert and Herzog, which were taped by investigators looking into claims that Sarkozy accepted illicit payments from the L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt for his 2007 presidential campaign.

He is expected to appeal the sentencing as he was convicted a year away from the country’s general election, but in the mean time he will serve the sentence at his home with an electronic tag or what other would call house arrest.
