Robert Mugabe School Has Raised Fees

Robert Mugabe (RG) Primary School in Marondera has raised fees much to the irritation of the parents who say they are already struggling to make ends meet.

A receipt that was seen by Pindula News suggests that a grade 2 pupil is supposed to pay a total of seven thousand one hundred and sixty Zimbabwe dollars (ZWL$7 160) up from ZWL$2884.

The school had earlier tabled the new fees structure before some of the parents who reportedly rejected the proposal saying the fees were not affordable.

When parents protested earlier this month, the school had proposed to raise fees from ZWL$2884 to ZWL$6560 but school authorities responded saying the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education had not even approved the proposal.

An official who spoke to Pindula News on 4 June justified the proposed figures saying the money was essential for the operation of the school. The official added:

_The school needs money to run. If we parents fail to pay the money, the learners will not get a quality education and that will have a negative impact on the Maronedera community and Zimbabwe at large._

The development comes as the majority of the citizenry is still to recover from the effects of the continuous coronavirus-induced lockdowns which started last year.

As the country is experiencing a coronavirus resurgence, the government is imposing additional measures to curb the novel virus, a situation that will see many people losing their sources of revenue.
