The Period Company in partnership with Minerva Risk Advisors have donated sanitary pads to women and young girls areas like Mbare in Harare, Chitungwiza, Domboshava and Epworth.
The sanitary pads campaign is aimed at easing the difficulty of underprivileged women and girls in various communities.
The two firms are targeting to assist at least 8 000 women and girls.
In an interview with The Herald, director of the Period Company, Mrs Telia Mhonda, said there have been major concerns from young girls and women over the rising costs of sanitary pads. She said:
We are there to promote menstrual hygiene as well as to ensure accessible hygienic materials for use so that both old and young women’s health is not compromised.
The main thrust of this initiative is to ensure that all underprivileged girls and women have access to sanitary pads.
Of late, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary school has been allocating funding for the provision of sanitary pads to the most vulnerable female pupils at primary and secondary levels.
The high price of sanitary pads has been affecting not only rural girls but University Students as well.
The matter even spilt into Parliament in June 2020 where the Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda said that Parliament would introduce a facility where female MPs will access sanitary pads while in the august House.
Mudenda was responding to calls by MDC-T proportional representation MP, Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga who had called for a facility to make it convenient for legislators to buy sanitary pads while attending Parliament.
Gender activists have been calling for free distribution of sanitary pads instead of condoms since “sex is a pleasure and by choice” while menstruation cannot be avoided.
