Zambia's Late Former President Rupiah Banda Laid To Rest

Zambia’s fourth President, Rupiah Banda, has been laid to rest at the country’s Presidential Burial Site in Lusaka.

The burial was attended by close family, former and current Presidents of the Republic who all described the late Banda as a humble soul who was an inspiration to all. It was also attended by foreign leaders.

Banda succumbed to cancer last week Friday aged 85.

President Hakainde Hichilema declared seven days of mourning in honour of the Zimbawean-born former Zambian President.

In his tribute at the state funeral held this Thursday President Hichilema gave credit to the late Banda for shunning segregation based on divergent views.

He added that the late Banda could create a calm atmosphere even when there was tension while urging young people to learn from freedom fighters and foster socio-economic development.

Among foreign leaders who attended the state funeral held at the Showgrounds in Lusaka this Thursday were President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Namibian President Hage Geingob, former Malawian President Bakili Muluzi, former Mozambican President Joachim Chissano and former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.
