Madhuku Criticises ED Govt Over Its Plans To Amend The Constitution

Constitutional law expert and leader of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), Lovemore Madhuku, has castigated the ruling ZANU PF party for its plans to amend the national Constitution.

Madhuku told the Daily News that the Constitutional Amendment Bill will not be passed into law in its current form even though the ruling party has a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Said Madhuku:

I am very much against the bill, primarily because it is the mere say of the ruling party. A ruling party must never be allowed to dictate the content of the Constitution.

Cabinet recently approved a Constitutional Amendment Bill which, among other things, removes the presidential running mates clause and empowers the President to appoint the public protector and deputy public protector in consultation with the Judicial Service Commission.

Madhuku is a member of the Political Actors Diagoue, a group of losing presidential candidates in the 2018 elections, which celebrated Unity Day at President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s farm in Kwekwe.
