"22 Years As Secretary-General Of PTUZ Certainly Doesn't Come Across As Progressive & Democratic," Opposition Leader On Majongwe's Retention

Former deputy Minister of Justice, advocate Obert Gutu has said that the retention of Raymond Majongwe as the Secretary-General of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe is not a democratic thing.

His remarks come when PTUZ has re-elected Raymond Majongwe uncontested as the union’s secretary-general at the same time reelecting Takavafira Zhou unopposed at the teachers’ union’ president at the national congress held in Harare at the weekend.

Posting on Twitter, the deputy president of the MDC led by Dr Thokozani Khupe said:

I have got absolutely nothing against this guy, trust me!
But 22 years as Secretary-General of PTUZ certainly doesn’t come across as progressive & democratic to me!!
Smacks of personalization of a trade union, if you ask me…!!

The Union represents teachers and lecturers in state and private education institutions.

PTUZ has been critical of the government and has also been criticising the Apex Council which it said was not representing the interests of workers.
