Thousands of prisoners will see themselves out of prison soon as the cabinet has approved a move by the justice minister to decongest the country’s 46 prisons through a general amnesty.
This was tweeted by the Ministry of Infomation which said:
Cabinet approved the proposal to have a General Amnesty for prisoners. Cabinet noted that the country’s prison population currently stands at 22 000 against an official holding capacity of 17 000. The Amnesty will decongest the country’s prisons.
ZPCS has reportedly been struggling to feed the inmates hence the general amnesty grant decision.
