Murder Probe: "There Could Be Many Unreported Child Murder Cases"

An investigation into the murder of a 7-year-old Murewa boy has suggested that there could be several unreported cases of child murder.

When some body parts had been discovered during the investigation, it was believed that they belonged to the boy from Makore family.

Laboratory tests conducted in Harare, however, confirmed the body parts are not a match as they belonged to a 14-year-old boy.

The boy’s assailants had gruesomely mutilated his body, taking away his head, arms and legs, leaving just the torso which was recovered from the jaws of dogs.

The deceased’s aunt, Beulah Musupayi told ZTN in an interview at a laboratory in Harare that the tests found that the head is of a person who died long back. She said:

The body was observed by two doctors and the parts did not match with that of the boy. The body which was discovered is that of a 14-year-old. Our son was seven years old.

We cannot afford the DNA tests as they cost over US$4000.

The development was confirmed by police spokesperson senior Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi who added that investigations were still ongoing.

The case comes less than two weeks after another minor, a girl who had been missing for several days, was discovered in a well in Harare’s Epworth suburb.

Some allege that the assailants could be using the body parts for rituals.
