Legal and political analyst Tinashe Hofisi projects that Zimbabwe-United States relations will remain the same whether president Donald Trump or his nemesis Joe Biden win the upcoming election.
Hofisi observes that although a United States president has the powers to review the Executive orders which saw Zimbabwe being put under sanctions, circumstances suggest that neither of the two presidential aspirants will likely move towards normalising relations with Zimbabwe.
He also observed that Trump has already maintained sanctions on Zimbabwe therefore if he is reelected, he is likely to maintain the status quo.
Hofisi also projects that if Joe Biden secures the White House, he also likely to keep ZIDERA in place since it was initially sponsored by senators from his party. He said:
ZIDERA was sponsored by a total of four senators, two of whom were Hillary Rodham Clinton and Joseph Robinette Biden. Hillary Clinton recently tweeted demanding the release of political prisoners in Zimbabwe, highlighting how the corporate wing of the Democratic Party is a powerful amplifier of opposition and civil society voices in Zimbabwe. With Joe Biden in the White House, the bipartisan agreement to financially isolate Zimbabwe and target persons and entities would thus continue without any significant alteration.
He also foresees Biden seeking to reset and not reform the United States which in short would mean that countries like Zimbabwe should only expect “a lukewarm serving filled with more of the same.”
Hofisi also predicts that Biden will champion an “imperial global order which uses human rights speak to coerce the conformity of the global south by threatening economic consequences for countries that dare challenge the orthodoxy of wealth retention by monopoly white capital.”
His analysis comes as Zimbabwe and SADC have just commemorated the Anti-Sanctions Day (25 October) calling the USA and her allies to lift sanctions on Zimbabwe which they say have choked economic growth.
