U.S. Urges Actors "Disrupting Sudan's Transition To Stand Down"

The United States embassy in Sudan has urged actors who are disrupting Sudan’s transition to stand down amid reports that security forces had taken some government ministers into custody.

The alleged arrests follow demonstrations in the country with protestors calling for a military to take over to replace the current cabinet with a new one that will be inclusive of everyone who took part in the protests that took off in December 2018.

Speaking following reports that some ministers had been taken into custody, the U.S. embassy in Khartoum said:

The U.S. embassy is gravely concerned by reports that the armed forces have taken action against Sudan’s civilian government, and condemns actions that are undermining Sudan’s democratic transition.

We call on all actors who are disrupting Sudan’s transition to stand down, and allow the civilian-led transitional government to continue its important work to achieve the goals of the revolution.

Tensions are rising between the military and civilians in the ruling government thereby threatening Sudan’s fragile transition to democracy since the military’s removal of al-Bashir in April 2019 after nearly three decades of autocratic rule.

The current crisis surfaced following last month’s coup attempt.
