New Duty Regime Sharply Reduces Vehicle Imports

There has been a sharp fall in the number of vehicles that are being handled at both Betbridge border post and Malindi Transit Shed. This is an indication that the number of imports of second-hand from Japan has fallen significantly. This development is attributable to the government’s move to demand that import duty on all vehicle imports be paid in foreign currency. There used to be 400 cars handled daily, and now the number has dropped to 7 cars a day. A source at Malindi Transit shed told Newsday that

… there is little business. We are experiencing this for the first time. At the peak, we received 71 car loads which translated to more than 400 cars per day.
