Nurses Extract Non-monetary Incentives From Govt

Zimbabwe Nurses’ Association (Zina) president Enock Dongo on Monday told The Herald that after negotiations with the government, nurses are yet to get an acceptable salary adjustment.

Dongo said that his association has successfully lobbied for long term non-monetary benefits such as the consideration of nurses for managerial positions in the Ministry of Health and Child Care. He said;

Yes, we are yet to get a meaningful adjustment from the employer, but as ZINA we have also managed to negotiate for other incentives which are valuable to the profession as a whole and have long-term benefits.

Through the negotiating forum, ZINA successfully lobbied for consideration of nurses for managerial positions in the ministry’s structure. For a long time, only doctors would be considered for these posts.

Dongo, however, bemoaned the government’s failure to award nurses a meaningful Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). He vowed to continue pushing the employer to consider the plight of nurses.
