The United Nations’s World Food Programme (WFP) has increased the number of food-insecure households it is targeting under its Urban Social Assistance pilot programme to 100,000.
In a statement issued on Friday, WFP said that the pilot will run for one year. Part of the statement read:
The objective of the pilot is to provide access to food through a social safety net to ‘at-risk’ households affected by challenges associated with socio-economic risks, vulnerabilities and poverty in urban and peri-urban areas of Zimbabwe.
FeedbackThe pilot will run for one year. In addition to the provision of food assistance through Cash-Based Transfers, this will be accompanied by resilience-building interventions to promote the well-being of vulnerable households in the urban areas and their ability to cope with shocks and stressors in future.
WFP will provide a food basket to households that will comprise of cereals, pulses and vegetable oil, with children under 5 years receiving the nutritious Super Cereal.
