Former Studio 263 actor Tinopona “Tintin” Katsande has issued a stark warning about the dire state of Zimbabwe’s public healthcare system, describing the ongoing crisis as a “silent genocide” caused by the severe shortage of essential medications.
In a heartfelt post on her Facebook page on Sunday, Katsande expressed her concern over the increasing number of deaths in government hospitals, attributing them to the inability of many patients to afford the necessary treatments. She wrote:

IF YOU DON’T HAVE MONEY TO BUY YOUR OWN MEDICATION AT GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS, even down to the actual needle for injections at some hospitals, 9 out of 10 times, you die because you didn’t get help, NOT BECAUSE ‘GOD WILLED IT’.
Our family members, colleagues, and even enemies are dying without a second thought…
There are no medicines, no beds, and hospital staff provide conflicting or inadequate information or diagnoses about patients (causing confusion even among themselves because they are clueless).
They don’t know how to tell a desperate patient, ‘We know what needs to be done, but sorry, we can’t help because we don’t have the resources to save you.’
Basically, people are being discharged to fend for themselves… No, this is unacceptable. This is not how things should be.

She raised further alarm over the dire state of Zimbabwe’s public healthcare system, recounting distressing personal accounts of medical negligence that have claimed lives.
Katsande shared a heart-wrenching story from just days ago, when a baby who had allegedly been discharged from Parirenyatwa Hospital tragically passed away.
She attributed the death to what she described as sheer negligence by the medical staff, coupled with confusion on the part of the doctors and nurses.
In a separate incident, Katsande revealed that a 16-year-old Lower Sixth student from Mutoko died from an asthma attack after the hospital, in a shocking lapse, had no oxygen, no nebuliser, and not even the basic asthma inhaler that is readily available in most pharmacies.
Katsande also took aim at the state-controlled media, mocking recent reports claiming that Zimbabwe now has a six-month supply of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs). She said:

Ukuwo ma newspaper anoti don’t worry 6 months supply of ARVS in the country availed, 2 months later vakuti, 2 months supply available meaning 6 months supply was a hoax???

She further alleged that some clinics have been informing HIV/AIDS patients that there are no ARVs available at all. Said Katsande:

I’m so, so angry… There’s no accountability for this NATIONAL DISASTER, which is affecting me worse than the cancer did.

Katsande said in Zimbabwe, if you fall ill and can’t afford medical treatment, you might as well start preparing your own coffin, as it’s a tragic reality for many. She added:

Anyway, I’m off to bury Mai Kandice from Mabvuku, who passed away after yesterday’s visiting hour while waiting for blood because the government hospital didn’t have the blood that could have saved her. She was anaemic and had been moving around unwell—she didn’t know.

She concluded her impassioned remarks by criticising Zimbabweans for their tendency to bury their heads in the sand and remain passive in the face of their struggles, saying:

Let’s just keep saying ‘it’s tough,’ crying, looking the other way, and life goes on.

Katsande’s comments come amid growing frustration over the state of Zimbabwe’s healthcare system, where the scarcity of vital drugs, medical equipment, and basic supplies has left the majority without the necessary care to survive.

Moses Mzila Ndlovu, the former Co-Minister of National Healing and Integration, asserts that the government deliberately minimizes the severity of the Gukurahundi “genocide”.
He said the ZANU PF-led Government does this by employing euphemistic language and terminology that subtly shifts blame onto the victims for the atrocities committed.
Speaking to <a href="https://cite.org.zw/govt-attempts-to-downplay-gukurahundi-by-using-mild-language-says-former-healing-minister/">CITE</a>, Ndlovu criticized Government officials for persistently using moderate terms such as “conflict,” “disturbances,” and “dissident activity” to characterise the “genocide” that unfolded in Matabeleland and the Midlands during the 1980s. He said:

In the last 40 years, ZANU PF has been trying without success to kill the Gukurahundi Genocide issue. Genocide is a crime under international law.
It was defined in 1948 as acts with intent to destroy in whole or in part, national, ethnic, religious or racial group by the United Nations Genocide Convention and Zimbabwe’s Gukurahundi Genocide has all the features of a Genocide.
The genocide nomenclature, has, however, been deliberately avoided by ZANU and the government as part of its continuing efforts to conceal the massive killings in Matabeleland.
They rather use inaccurate terminology meant to mislead the public, terminology that accuses the victims of being responsible for the crime.
This, however, is normal in Genocide situations. The victims are variously accused and labelled to set them apart from the rest of the population for purposes of extermination.
Part of the criminal effort to bury the crime is found in the inappropriate language they use to project the killings as an ordinary military operation…
To say Gukurahundi is a conflict is a gross misrepresentation of facts. Conflict takes two or more sides using violence on the upper scale to resolve their differences such as in war. There was no war or conflict after Rhodesia became Zimbabwe.

He said the Government has made some members of the public believe the pronouncements on decriminalising Gukurahundi when the real motive is to destroy the evidence and bury the issue under concrete.
Ndlovu emphatically stated that during the Gukurahundi, there existed no dual perspectives; rather, the Fifth Brigade operated unilaterally in an “imaginary battlefield” populated by genuine individuals with authentic languages, emotions, cultures, and the same fundamental need for safety as any other citizens in the country. He said:

Is it not curious enough that there were no casualties suffered by the Fifth Brigade during its notorious operation code named Gukurahundi which itself spells out the specific purpose and intent of the barbarians…
It was not even a case of an upper hand they enjoyed against a false enemy force but the absence of that force.
How could unarmed civilians, many in their advanced ages and frail while others were unborn babies constitute the other side of the ‘conflict?’ Bizzare!

Gukurahundi was a dark chapter in Zimbabwe’s history, marked by a series of mass killings that occurred between 1982 and 1987.
The term itself derives from the Shona language and roughly translates to “the early rain which washes away the chaff before the spring rains.
Thousands of people in the provinces of Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, and Midlands were detained, marched to re-education camps, tortured, raped, and summarily executed.

Govt Accused Of Using "Euphemisms" To Downplay Gukurahundi

Rwandan fugitive Ukiliho Kayishema Fulgence has been captured in South Africa.
Kayishema, who was one of four remaining fugitives from the 1994 Rwandan genocide, was arrested in South Africa on Wednesday.
He is expected to face trial in Rwanda.
<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-65709893">BBC</a> reported that the former police inspector, who was born in 1961, was charged in 2001 over the killing of more than 2 000 Tutsi men, women and children inside a Catholic church where they had sought refuge.
According to the indictment by UN prosecutors, Kayishema directly participated in the planning and execution of a massacre of refugees hiding at the Nyange church in Kivumu, Kibuye prefecture, on 15 April 1994.
Kayishema, born in 1961, and others allegedly tried to burn the church down with the refugees inside.
When this failed, they bulldozed it, burying and killing all those hiding there.
The corpses of the victims were then buried in mass graves.
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), which is based in The Hague, welcomed Kayishema’s arrest.
Kayishema was arrested by a South African elite police unit at a grape farm in Paarl, in Western Cape province.
He had been living under the false name of Donatien Nibashumba.
Kayishema made a first appearance in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Friday.
The charges of genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide and crimes against humanity have been brought against him.
South African NPA spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, outside court said Kayishema also faces a charge of fraud. <a href="https://ewn.co.za/0001/01/01/more-charges-to-be-brought-against-rwandan-fugitive-fulgence">He said:</a>

Rwandan Fugitive Accused Of Killing 2 000 In Church Arrested

Zimbabwe has committed to cooperating in bringing to justice the perpetrators of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
The Rwandan Genocide is one of the most notorious modern genocides which occurred between April and July 1994.
Almost one million ethnic Tutsi and moderate Hutu were killed as the international community and UN peacekeepers stood by.
Zimbabwe’s acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amon Murwira, said there cannot be justice and lasting peace without full accountability. <a href="https://www.newtimes.co.rw/article/6665/news/kwibuka/zimbabwe-commits-to-bring-perpetrators-of-1994-genocide-against-the-tutsi-to-justice">The New Times</a> quoted Murwira as saying:

The primary responsibility to prevent and stop genocide lies with all of us.
On that note let me reaffirm Zimbabwe’s commitment to providing support to all international and continental efforts to bring to book those responsible for genocide in Rwanda and elsewhere.
We believe there cannot be justice and lasting peace without full accountability.

Murwira was addressing Rwandans living in Zimbabwe, diplomats accredited to Zimbabwe, the business community and friends of Rwanda.
Last year, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-denies-hiding-rwandese-genocidaire-protais-mpiranya-full-statement/">Zimbabwe denied that it had harboured the most wanted Rwandese fugitive, Protais Mpiranya</a>, whose remains were found in Zimbabwe under the alias Ndume Sambao.
While Murwira committed Zimbabwe to bring to justice the perpetrators of the Rwanda Genocide, the Government of Zimbabwe is yet to bring to justice those responsible for the Gukurahundi killings in the 1980s.
Moreover, the findings of the Chihambakwe Commission of Inquiry, which was set up by the government to investigate Gkurahundi, were never made public.
The Government has also failed to bring to account those responsible for the 01 August 2018 killings as recommended by the Motlanthe Commission.

Zimbabwe Commits To Bring Perpetrators Of 1994 Rwandan Genocide To Justice

Bulawayo-based pressure group, Ibhetshu LikaZulu, has criticised President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his visit to the Kigali Memorial on Wednesday to pay tribute to over 600 000 victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
Mnangagwa, who is in Rwanda for the #AGRF2022 Summit, was accompanied by some Rwandan government officials to the site and laid a wreath in honour of the victims.
But Ibhetshu LikaZulu, which was formed in pursuit of justice for the victims of the Gukurahundi killings, labelled Mnangagwa’s tour of the Kigali Memorial hypocritical.
The group queried why Mnangagwa paid tribute to the victims of the Rwandan genocide when back home, suspected state agents have continued to deface and vandalise Gukurahundi memorials by activists and survivors. It said:

Shocking that he poses there when in his country a genocide is still unresolved, thousands are lying in shallow graves, commemorative plaques erected by families are bombed and stolen! The irony of it is astounding.

For instance, a Gukurahundi memorial plaque at Bhalagwe in Maphisa has been vandalised three times by suspected state security agents in just two years.
South African opposition leader Mmusi Maimane, commenting on a Twitter thread, also described Mnangagwa’s gesture as hypocritical. He wrote:

The Rwandan genocide occurred between 7 April and 15 July 1994, with members of the Tutsi minority ethnic group massacred by armed Hutu militias.

"Hypocritical", Mnangagwa Criticised For Honouring Rwandan Genocide Victims

National Assembly Speaker, Jacob Mudenda, has urged the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) to bring closure to the Gukurahundi issue before the 2023 elections.
Gukurahundi is a term used to refer to a military operation in Matabeleland and Midlands in the 1980s which resulted in the death of an estimated 20 000 Ndebele people.
Addressing the NPRC Commissioners during their induction on the role and functions of Parliament, Mudenda said the NPRC’s responsibility is to build national consensus for the peaceful resolution of human conflict. He said:

Parliament is desirous to see how the NPRC leverages its constitutional mandate vis-à-vis the salutary efforts by the Council of Chiefs, as guided by His Excellency, the President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, in bringing closure to the Gukurahundi unfortunate historical antecedent before the 2023 harmonized elections.
It is axiomatic to note that the Constitution, the NPRC Act, and the NPRC Regulations impose an onerous responsibility in building national consensus, whose bedrock ought to be sustainable human conflict and solutions which must emanate from the co-existential culture of tolerance and respect for the other human dignity.

In August last year, President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced that chiefs will take a lead in resolving the issue of Gukurahundi, but not much has been done.
In recent days, political commentators have expressed doubt over the Government’s willingness to address the Gukurahundi issue after it emerged that Zimbabwe harboured Protais Mpiranya for four years before his death and burial in Harare in 2006.
Mpiranya, also known as Sambao Ndume, was a Rwandan war criminal who was internationally wanted for his alleged role in the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994 but was found dead and buried in Harare in 2022 by United Nations investigators.

Mudenda Challenges NPRC To Address Gukurahundi Before 2023 Elections

The Rwandan Government was not amused by Zimbabwe’s characterisation of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and moderate Hutu as the “1994 Rwandan Genocide”.
The Rwandan Embassy in Zimbabwe said that the genocide was against the Tutsi ethnic group and therefore could not be referred to as the Rwandan genocide.
In a tweet in response to the statement by Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Fredrick Shava, denying that Zimbabwe harboured fugitive Rwandese Genocidaire Protais Mpiranya, the Rwandan Embassy <a href="https://twitter.com/RwandaZimbabwe/status/1525884697733214208">said:</a>

The Embassy wishes to advise the correction of “1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda” as opposed to the way [it] is mentioned in the statement.

In the statement, Shava said Zimbabwe fully cooperated with the UN Residual Mechanism in its investigations of Mpiranya.
The Rwandese fugitive was indicted in 2000 by the International Criminal Tribunal for his role in the 1994 Tutsi genocide.
Mpiranya was the head of the Rwandan presidential guard in 1994 when the genocide that killed up to 800 000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus occurred.
He allegedly gave his men a kill list of prominent Tutsis and orders to kill their families too.
He armed and trained the notorious Interahamwe Hutu militia, responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths.
When the plane carrying the country’s president, Juvénal Habyarimana, was shot down in Kigali on 5 April 1994, Mpiranya sent his men to set up roadblocks at which Tutsis were massacred.
Soldiers from the presidential guard murdered the prime minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana, a moderate Hutu, and mutilated her body.
Mpiranya’s men also shot the 10 lightly armed Belgian soldiers who had been sent to protect Uwilingiyimana and hacked them to death with machetes.
When the Hutu regime collapsed in July 1994, Mpiranya fled across Africa, spending four years in Cameroon before moving to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In DRC, Mpiranya, with Hutu forces under his command, fought alongside Zimbabwean troops on behalf of the country’s president Laurent Kabila, against the Rwandan army.
In 2002, Mpiranya was reportedly flown from Mbuji-Mayi in central DRC to Harare on a Zimbabwean military plane.
Using a fake identity, he started a transport business in Zimbabwe likely with proceeds from Congolese diamonds but both his buses were involved in accidents and there was no money to repair them.
He died in Harare in October 2006 of a heart attack brought on by tuberculosis, at the age of 50 and was buried under a false name, Sambao Ndume whose date of birth matched his, 30 May 1956.
The French inscription on the tombstone read: “Here rests forever one who loved his fatherland, his people and his family, more than his own life.”
Protais Mpiranya’s body lies at Granville Cemetery, also known as kuMbudzi, hundreds of kilometres away from his country.

Rwanda Corrects Zimbabwe's Description Of The 1994 Genocide Against The Tutsi

Bulawayo-based pressure group, Ibhetshu Likazulu, has applauded chiefs for calling on the Government to apologise publicly over Gukurahundi but said an apology alone won’t be enough to bring closure to the issue.
On Friday, Matabeleland South provincial Chiefs assembly chairperson Chief Masendu advised President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government to apologise for the Gukurahundi massacres.
Ibhetshu Likazulu Coordinator Mbuso Fuzwayo said a victim-centred approach should be adopted in dealing with the sensitive issue for there to be closure. He said:

It is good now that Chiefs are putting their demands to the government concerning the Gukurahundi issue, but l think an apology alone without truth-telling, commission or anything that is not victim-centred is not going to bring closure to the genocide. Apology before acknowledgement will certainly not work.

Fuzwayo also lauded the traditional leaders for condemning the latest destruction of the Gukurahundi memorial plaque at Bhalagwe in Maphisa in the province.
The destruction of the plaque, which occurred on 4 January this year, was the third in two years. Fuzwayo said:

When Chiefs deplore such barbaric behaviour, it also gives confidence to the people that their leaders are with them.
Mind you, people have sacrificed their scarce resources to mount the plague, but someone just decide to destroy all that with impunity.
Again, we applaud the Chiefs for that but they should go further and demand the cessation of such wayward behaviour in future.

Mnangagwa, who was State Security Minister during the atrocities, in spite of opening dialogue on the matter, has not offered any apology for the mass killings just like his predecessor, the late Robert Mugabe.
Critics have described Mnangagwa’s attempts to redress the conflict as insincere.

"Gukurahundi: Apology Without Truth-telling Won't Work"

The Zimbabwean Government has pledged to fully cooperate with the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) in matters of investigations into the whereabouts of the Rwandan Genocide fugitives, The New Times reported.
The IRMTC took over the work of two United Nations (UN) courts, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and that of former Yugoslavia (ICTY), after the two courts were dissolved.
Addressing the UN Security Council during a session to update the council on the activities of the IRMCT on Monday 13 December 2021, Serge Brammertz, Prosecutor of IRMCT, said:

With respect to Zimbabwe, I undertook an official mission to Harare in early November, where I met with Vice President (Constantine) Chiwenga and other senior officials.
We discussed positive results achieved recently in our joint efforts, as well as key outstanding issues.
As a result of these discussions, I submitted a set of concrete recommendations on how to further improve our cooperation and reiterated our pending requests for vital information from Zimbabwean authorities.
While I have not yet received a response, I trust that in the coming period, I will be able to report that Zimbabwe is providing full and effective cooperation.

Zimbabwe has for a long time been accused of harbouring Rwandese genocide fugitives.
Among those being sought by the UN Court and believed to be hiding in Zimbabwe is Protais Mpiranya.
He is the former commander of the Presidential Guards who allegedly spearheaded killings mainly in Kigali during the Genocide against the Tutsi.
Mpiranya is considered by the UN court as “Big Fish” and whom the Mechanism insists it must try before it is dissolved, The New Times further reported.
The remaining five fugitives, including Flugence Kayishema, are believed to be in South Africa.
The ICTR laid charges against the five but their files were later handed to Rwanda.
This means that in case of their arrest, they will be tried in Rwandan courts.

Zimbabweans React As Govt Veto U.N. Resolution On Ending Genocide

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba said Zimbabwe voted against a United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly measure that seeks to protect vulnerable populations against genocide because of a part of the resolution that deals with the responsibility to protect.
Responsibility to Protect – known as R2P – is an international norm that empowers the international community to act to halt the mass atrocity crimes of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
Charamba argued that R2P was used to attack Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya, and was almost used by Western powers to invade Zimbabwe during the late Robert Mugabe era.

Often what is termed GENOCIDE is not that; rather, it neatly fits within Western extra-territorial goals. However, some observers said that the “No” vote by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime was a frantic attempt to avert a consequential reckoning with its past atrocities.
These atrocities include the killing of more than 20 000 people between 1983 and 1987, mostly unarmed civilians from the minority Ndebele ethnic group during Gukurahundi.

Mnangagwa Spokesperson Explains Why Zimbabwe Vetoed U.N. Resolution Against Genocide

Zimbabwe on Tuesday voted against a United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly measure that seeks to protect vulnerable populations against “genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.”
The resolution was adopted with 115 countries including neighbouring South Africa and Botswana voting in favour.
Fifteen (15) mostly rogue states that are notorious for some of the worst human rights violations – among them, North Korea, Russia, China, Burundi, and Eritrea – voted against the resolution.
The passage of the resolution puts the subject permanently on the UN agenda with the secretary-general now required “to report annually to the General Assembly on the responsibility to protect and the prevention of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.” The U.N. said:
<blockquote>In far too many situations around the world, civilian populations are experiencing indiscriminate attacks on schools and medical facilities, widespread rape and sexual violence perpetrated as a weapon of war, disproportionate and deadly force being used against peaceful protesters, and institutionalized persecution of minority groups.</blockquote>
Political analysts say it is not surprising that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime voted against the resolution because the Zimbabwean government is guilty of past atrocities against its own people.
These include the killing of more than 20 000 people between 1983 and 1987, mostly unarmed civilians from the minority Ndebele ethnic group during Gukurahundi.
Mnangagwa and the late Robert Mugabe, who was president at the time, are some of the key ZANU PF culprits accused of orchestrating the massacres in the Midlands and Matabeleland provinces.
They are also accused of unleashing a vicious cycle of recurring political violence that has killed thousands of mainly opposition MDC supporters during election campaigns from the early 2000s.
Harare lawyer and opposition politician Tenda Biti told Zimlive that by rejecting U.N. measures against genocide, Mnangagwa has made himself a national embarrassment. Said Biti:

Zimbabwe Votes Against U.N. Measures To Stop Genocide

President Emmerson Mnangagwa says Zimbabweans should freely discuss and chart the way forward on the Gukurahundi massacres that occurred a few years after independence from the British in 1980.
Thousands of civilians mostly in the Matebeleland and Midlands Provinces were killed by the North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) between 1982 and 1987.
The army had been deployed to the country’s southern region to hunt down a few hundred renegade former freedom fighters who had gone rogue after independence.
In his Independence speech to be aired this Saturday on ZBCtv, President Mnangagwa urged those who were affected by Gukurahundi to come forward and contribute to the “discussion”. He said:
<blockquote>In my view, it is not useful to avoid an issue that affects us as a nation. It is better we discuss the issue and find a lasting solution. In future what is not good for our country can be avoided.
Everybody affected has an opportunity to come forward so that we can discuss it together. We can chart the way forward.</blockquote>
The late former president, Robert Mugabe described the disturbances as “a moment of madness”.
The massacres ended when the country’s main opposition party at the time, ZAPU, was swallowed by the ruling ZANU PF in an agreement dubbed the Unity Accord signed on 22 December 1987.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily News MDC Alliance Vice President, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Biti">Tendai Biti</a> said it is clear powerful politicians are behind<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi"> Mashurugwi</a> and he felt that the infamous gangs were being prepared to carry out a fresh genocide.
Biti also said an independent international judiciary commissioner is supposed to be set up to investigate the machete-wielding gangs that are terrorising citizens in many parts of the country.

More people have been killed by the gangsters than those killed on August 1, 2018. They are so brazen and one gets a feeling that they must be operating with the backing of a very big political office. I mean, who can do what these people are doing, including killing a police officer? That doesn’t happen in Zimbabwe</blockquote>
