Harare City Council to cut all salaries, admits that everyone is overpaid

Harare Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni announced that Harare City Council (HCC) is going to cut the salaries of all of its workers.  He admitted that every worker was overpaid.  Manyenyeni said the move was necessary because HCC’s revenues had gone down and described it as “rationalisation.”  Some of the HCC workers have gone more than 6 months without receiving therir salaries.

Manyenyeni said:

Everyone is being overpaid. A State-registered nurse in council earns $1 527 per month as opposed to $500 for government nurses and about $900 in private facilities.

A security guard in council earns $1 027, though their rank is similar to a constable in the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

…ideally, council salaries should be between government and private sector (rates), however, we are going above all those.
