Maths, Science among subjects now being taught in local languages

Under the New Curriculum which was implemented at the beginning of this year, starting from  Early Childhood Development (ECD), pupils will be taught all subjects in their vernacular languages. The idea is that this will “enable (children) to fully grasp key concepts.”

Education Minister Lazarus Dokora said,

The medium of communication or instruction for infants or our ECD is supposed to be the mother language. This will ensure children feel at home during lessons and that they express themselves freely.

This means that ECD pupils will be taught Mathematics and Science, among other subjects using local languages. The full list of ECD subjects, all of which will be taught in local languages is as follows:

  • Languages
  • Visual and Performing Arts
  • Physical Education
  • Mass Displays
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Family and Heritage Studies and
  • ICT.

The local language to be used will depend on the location as the constitution lists 16 official languages. Here is the list of official languages:

  • Chewa
  • Chibarwe
  • English
  • Kalanga
  • Khoisan
  • Ndau
  • Ndebele
  • Shangani
  • Shona
