Dabengwa says Mphoko is mad for deciding to exhume Gukurahundi remains without consulting ZIPRA war veterans

ZAPU president Dumiso Dabengwa has described Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko as “a mad man” and said that the Vice President has no authority to decide to exhume Gukurahundi remains without consulting ZIPRA Veterans Association.

Said Dabengwa:

He (Mphoko) must be mad. I do not think anyone, even the President has the power to unilaterally decide to exhume Gukurahundi remains without consulting ZIPRA Veterans Association. They are the ones who have got an idea of which of the ZIPRA combatants are in those known sites.

Dabengwa said former ZIPRA combatants travelled the Midlands and Matebeleland provinces identifying Gukurahundi victims’ graves. He said:

After identifying the graves, it was decided that exhumation can only be done after extensive consultations with the next of kin. The war veterans have made it very clear that, as far as the remains are concerned, they are still to conclude the consultation process.
