Free Eye Cataracts Operations Camp at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (Sekuru Kaguvi Eye Hospital) in partnership with the International Islamic Relief Organization of Saudi Arabia (IIROSA) Southern Africa Regional Office will be holding free cataract operations from 25 – 29 0f September 2017.

This is for the second time that the Organization is conducting this philanthropic program after successfully implementing a similar camp in 2015 which saw about 550 people getting their eye sight restored. The program aims to reach out to the majority poor and disadvantaged people of all ages who cannot afford the cataract surgery due to many factors including the costs.

The program will also cater for those with special conditions such as the diabetic, through the help of the Diabetic Association of Zimbabwe. Special emphasis is put on the able-bodied who can go through the theatre procedures on their own to avoid special arrangements.

The eye camp is meant for cataracts only. It is aiming to operate on at least 500 to 600 patients with cataracts for free. All operations will be done by the local specialists at Sekuru Kaguvi Eye Hospital. Dr Macheka and Dr Kufa will be leading the team of Eye Specialists who will be conducting the Eye camp.

The first screening day will be on Friday 22 September 2017, and it will continue on 25 up to 28 September 2017, while the operating days are only from the 25th to the 29th of September 2017 excluding Saturday and Sunday.

During the screening days, the Doctors will be looking for patients with operable cataracts and once these are identified the patients will be put on theatre list for operation on the same day or on the following day. (25/09/2017 – 29/09/2017).

Once the operation is done patients are expected to come the following day for removal of bandages and to be issued with eye medicines and be taught on follow-up treatment and reviews. There will be two more other visits at two weeks and at six weeks at the end of which the eye should have fully healed. This will be done under the same free eye cataract services.

The International Islamic Relief Organization of Saudi Arabia extends its helping hand to the people of Zimbabwe and wishes to provide similar free eye cataract camps every year at different levels.
