ZCTU Says Appointment Of New Registrar General Must Be Rescinded Due To Allegations Of Sexual Harassment
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (Zctu) has called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to rescind the appointment of Registrar General (RG) Clemence Masango until allegations against him have been resolved. Masango is facing allegations of sexually harassing subordinates from his time at the Immigration Department. A number of women appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Public Service and alleged that they had been fired because they rebuffed Masango’s sexual advances. The matter is being investigated by the Zimbabwe Gender Commission. ZCTU president Peter Mutasa said,
We regard the appointment or reassignment as lack of judgment by the appointing authority. While we respect the fact that every accused person is innocent until proven guilty, the elevation is actually a direct interference with the Gender Commission’s investigation…… as a result, we are going to demand that the appointment be rescinded until investigations are concluded. We will also look at the legal options.
