Govt Ridiculed For Linking An Earthquake To Cyclone Idai
The government of Zimbabwe has been ridiculed for claiming that a 3.8 earthquake hit the country last month at the same time as Tropical Cyclone Idai.
The conclusion seems to have been drawn from superstitious villagers who claim to have heard loud rumblings in the mountains when landslides occurred causing infrastructure to collapse. A commentator on social media had this to say:
The Zimbabwe government says an earthquake measuring 3.8 hit the country at the same time as Cyclone Idai, the bizarre thing is no one else detected the earthquake. Below is USGS data showing earthquakes around Africa in the past 30 days.
FeedbackAddressing journalist in Harare on Tuesday during a post-cabinet media briefing, Minister of Information, Monica Mutsvangwa said:
Cabinet has also established that the scale of the disaster was to some extent exacerbated by a 3.8 magnitude earthquake which hit the Chimanimani areas shortly before the onset of the cyclone.
