Govt To Announce A 5-Months Long Cushion For Civil Servants

Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister, Dr Sekai Nzenza, together with Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, are expected to announce a five-months long cushion for civil servants. This follows a series of meetings between the government and workers which however failed to resolve the salary issue.

Workers are demanding a cushioning allowance of at least $4 750 for the least paid arguing that the soaring inflation has eroded their salaries hence unsustainable for them to continue executing their duties and responsibilities.

In response, the government has among other measures offered a $400 million cost of living adjustment package in April which workers say has also since been eroded by inflation. In addition to the allowance, the government deployed the heavily subsidised ZUPCO buses which charge extremely low prices compared to privately owned public transport.

Apex Council officials yesterday marched to Kaguvi building and the new government complex in Harare in protest over the government’s reluctance to award them a living wage. The Civil Service Apex Council and Health Apex Council handed a petition to the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare. The same was also handed to the Minister of Finance.

This comes after the government last week offered civil servants a ZWL$97 cushioning allowance which they vehemently rejected. Meanwhile, members of the armed forces reportedly received ZWL$400 cushioning allowance.

Apex Council president, Mrs Cecilia Alexander, told journalists yesterday that their earnings had depreciated from at least US$475 to a mere US$47 currently for the lowest paid civil servant.
