FULL TEXT: 8 Gunmen Attempt To Abduct MDC Officials At Prayer Meeting

Below is the full statement by the Zimbabwe Council of Churches over the alleged attempted abduction of MDC officials by 8 gunmen at a prayer meeting:

Psalm 46 verses 1-2: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though mountains shake in the heart of the sea.

The evening of the 31st of July 2019 saw the successful hosting of the final episode of The Zimbabwe Political Dialogue Series in partnership with ZimPapers Television Network (ZTN) at The Venue, in Avondale, Harare.

This was the 7th episode of this political dialogue platform, whose aim was to create a safe space for different political players to find each other towards a lasting solution to the myriad of challenges facing the nation.
The panellists were drawn from various political parties and civil society organizations.

Also in attendance were members of the diplomatic community, Church leaders and members of various congregations, Legislators, Business, members of different political parties, Academia, Civil Society Organizations, students, and members of the public.

After the conclusion of the programme and a light snack, people started making their way out of the venue sometime after 2100hrs. It is around this time that an attempted abduction of MDC officials who were part of the panel took place in full view of the guests who included women from various churches who were part of the event.

About Five (5) to eight (8) gun-wielding men in 2 motor vehicles, a Toyota Rav-4, and a White Toyota Quantum minibus were involved in this violent act. However, their efforts were foiled by members of the officials’ entourage. This incident was reported to the police.

1. As the church body that had created such a sacred and safe space for respectful engagement, we feel such acts of violence violate all forms of decency and should be condemned in the strongest of terms.

2. We urge the law enforcement agents to carry out the necessary investigations to ascertain what transpired and bring the culprits to book.

3. We are sowing the seeds of tolerance, unity in diversity, and nationhood by convening such dialogue processes

4. We must all embrace this opportunity to come together in order to rescue the situation through meaningful engagement, while it is available.

5. The nation finds itself in a paralyzing complex of challenges that can only be effectively and sustainably resolved through a comprehensive and broad-based national dialogue.

As such we call upon all Zimbabweans to support such a call which offers to unite Zimbabweans towards a peaceful, just and prosperous nation.
