Chamisa Calls On Govt To Pay Workers In USD
MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa says the ZANU PF-led government should abandon the use of the local currency and pay public workers in US dollars.
In his Workers Day speech on Friday, Chamisa said civil servants’ salaries are inadequate to cover basics such as transport to and from work, rentals and purchase of food. He said:
Our doctors earn close to $5 000, an equivalent of US$100; this does not happen anywhere else in the world, our soldiers and police are earning less than US$20. The poverty levels they face every day are so heart wrenching.
FeedbackWe hope in the coming days, they will listen to the advice which we are giving them and start paying workers in US$. We should shelve the local currency until such a time we have corrected the economic fundamentals in the country.
Chamisa also condemned the ongoing demolitions of “illegal” vending stalls in urban areas saying the exercise amounts to wanton destruction of people’s livelihoods.
He urged authorities to talk to the vendors and get consensus or use courts to resolve the issue rather than resorting to commando resolution of problems.
