2 Prison officers and 4 inmates have tested positive for COVID-19, ZBC News reports. This was revealed in a post-cabinet briefing by the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Senator Monica Mutsvangwa who said the inmates and prison officers who tested positive were from Beitbridge and Plumtree.
Said Mutsvangwa;
We wish to advise the nation that we have now recorded positive cases in our prisons. We have three confirmed cases at Beitbridge Prison, one is an officer and the two are inmates. At Plumtree Prison, we also have two inmates who have been confirmed positive and one officer
FeedbackThe inmates have been isolated within the facilities and officers are now in self-isolation at their homes. The institutions have also been disinfected.
Mtsvangwa also took the time to remind the public that the nation is still under lockdown and discouraged large gatherings:
The nation is therefore reminded that Coronavirus is in our midst and our numbers are rising. It is not advisable to be in large crowds where one is exposed.
Government, together with Harare City Council is working on plans to decongest Mbare Musika through decentralization, as was the case in the decentralization of the Tobacco Auction Floors.
Zimbabwe recorded 178 cases of COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic in December 2019.
