Zimbabwe Govt Summons US Ambassador To Explain White House 'Adversary' Comments

The Zimbabwe government has summoned American Ambassador Brian Nichols to explain claims made by a senior US official that Zimbabwe was among several countries interfering in violent protests in parts of the US.

Sibusiso Moyo, the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister confirmed that Nichols has been summoned. A senior government official is quoted as having said:

Anyone who has seen the genesis of recent events, from the tragic death of Mr Floyd to the subsequent protests, will realise that any accusations of Zimbabwean involvement at any stage are farcical.

In a post on Twitter, Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Nick Mangwana said Zimbabwe does not consider itself an enemy of the United States. He said:

Zimbabwe does not consider itself America’s adversary. We prefer having friends and allies to having unhelpful adversity with any other nation including the US.

US President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor, Robert O’Brien, on Sunday claimed that Zimbabwe, China, Russia and Iran were “foreign adversaries” who are trying to take advantage of anti-racist protests in America to interfere in that country’s affairs.

Violent protests flared up in several parts of the United States after a white police officer killed an unarmed black man, George Floyd in Powderhorn, Minneapolis, Minnesota last week.
