Harare Hospital Midwives Down Tools As Matron Succumbs To COVID-19
Midwives and nurses at Sally Mugabe, formerly Harare Hospital, have reportedly downed tools after their colleague, a Matron at the institution, succumbed to COVID-19 in the early hours of Thursday, January 7, 2021.
Sources privy to the developments say the midwives are refusing to enter the hospital premises until the issue of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) has been resolved. Said the anonymous source:
Apparently, the midwives are outside as we speak, they are refusing to enter the buildings following the death of the Matron. The Matron was on duty on Sunday then she started feeling sick. After getting tested, her result came out positive and she got admitted. Unfortunately, she died today.
FeedbackWhen she died, all the other midwives have downed tools. The problem is that we don’t have adequate PPE here. The only PPE we have are Plastic Aprons and surgical masks and yet we are supposed to be wearing N95 Masks and heavy gears so we won’t get it unless we get the PPE we demand.
A large number of health caregivers in public health institutions has since last year defected to the private sector citing potential exposure to coronavirus and poor salaries.

Some have been embarking on a series of demonstrations demanding restoration of their 2018 salaries which were in United States dollars.
The latest development comes amid reports that the recent spike in coronavirus cases is pushing local hospitals to the brink.
