Victoria Falls Tourist Finally Buried
Roy George Tinashe Dikinya (40), the late local tourist who died after slipping on a Victoria Falls gorge on New Year’s Day, was buried on Saturday at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare.
Dikinya, a fitness instructor, was walking parallel to the edge of the falls, missed a step, slid, failed to catch his grip on wet rocks before falling hundreds of metres into the chasm.
His remains were found trapped within the gorge and recovered after a five-day operation by rescuers who included members of the Air Force of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority rangers.
The Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, John Mangwiro, was among those who attended Dikinya’s burial ceremony.
The late fitness instructor’s family thanked the Government for retrieving his remains. His mother, Eileen Dikinya, said it was disheartening to lose her son in such an unfortunate manner. She said:
It is painful, very painful to lose him this way. But we thank the efforts of those who recovered his remains. This afforded us the chance to give him a decent burial.
