Woman (23) Gang-raped, Robbed By Mushikashika Crew

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned members of the public against boarding pirate taxis (mushikashika) as they risk being raped and robbed.

This comes after a 23-year-old Harare woman was gang-raped by two men and robbed of her US$6 and Tecno cellphone after she boarded a pirating Toyota Wish on the 13th of August. The ZRP posted on Twitter:

The ZRP reiterates that members of the public must avoid boarding mushikashika vehicles. On 13/08/21, a Harare woman (23) was gang-raped by two men after she boarded an unmarked Toyota Wish vehicle with three occupants including one woman along Westhood Drive.

The suspects also stole her US$6 and a Techno cellphone.

Members of the public who responded to the police tweet were not amused and blamed authorities for the criminality following the ban of kombis which were convenient to commuters.

One Takunda said: “There is no way people can avoid that. In a normal country, we should have public transport. But unfortunately, we do have a cartel controlling transport system looting state resources through that franchise”.

The Young Man said: “I do not want to use Mushikashika but did you know that in Mutare, by 1700hrs #zupco buses won’t be servicing routes anymore? I work out of town and each day, ndinozosvika mutown mazupco apera.”

Tee Nyahasha said: “Thanks for the heads up & concern but do you know that we have a transport problem? Until that is resolved you will see that you will be posting such messages almost on a daily basis. You will best take care of the citizens in this regard by providing reliable transportation 1st!”

Gurundoro also chipped in: “This happens out of desperation, Zupco is failing to service all routes, short term measure bring back Kombis in a well structured and organized manner. It’s sad that members of the public have limited options when it comes to transport. It’s bad, bad.”
