Zimbabwe Granted Observer Status At CHOGM 2022

Zimbabwean government officials, business leaders, students, and members of civil society are in Kigali, Rwanda, for the 2022 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2022), as the southern African country seeks to be re-admitted to the club.

Zimbabwe withdrew from the Commonwealth in 2003 following differences with the United Kingdom but has been seeking re-admission since the November 2017 military coup.

On 15 May 2018, President Emmerson Mnangagwa submitted an application to rejoin the club of 54 countries from different continents.

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Rwanda Charity Manyeruke, who is attending CHOGM 2022, said the country welcomed an invitation to attend the meeting. She said:

Zimbabwe is excited to be participating in Commonwealth forums as this presents opportunities to network with the international community taking into account the government of Zimbabwe’s policy of engagement and re-engagement.

The commonwealth meeting in Kigali has provided opportunities for our Zimbabwean diaspora across the globe who are participating as panellists, facilitators, and delegates in the forums.

I have met with the Zimbabwean Diaspora, media, private sector, academia, civil society, those in finance and banking, arts and students. They have had an opportunity to engage.

Women Affairs Minister, Stembiso Nyoni attended the Commonwealth Women Forum while Foreign Affairs and International Trade Deputy Minister David Musabayana and Tourism and Hospitality Deputy Minister, Barbara Rwodzi, were attending the Commonwealth Business Forum.

Musabayana said Zimbabwe was invited to attend CHOGM 2022 as observers and the delegation has used the opportunity to network.

He said the process for Zimbabwe’s bid to be readmitted into the Commonwealth was going well.
