Charles Warara is a Zimbabwean lawyer known for his role in leading the private prosecution and incarceration of ex-Bikita West MP, Munyaradzi Kereke.
Career
Warara played a leading role in the incarceration of Munyaradzi Kereke who was found guilty in July 2016 for raping a minor relative at gunpoint. Kereke had evaded justice for six years but served an effective 10-year jail sentence following his conviction. Warara managed to pursue justice for the victim against the State’s refusal to prosecute Kereke, citing insufficient evidence to secure a conviction.
The case took four years, as Warara sought to privately prosecute Kereke, as the Prosecutor-General opposed the granting of the private prosecution certificate. The matter was only settled by the Constitutional Court, paving the way for the trial early in 2016 at the Harare Magistrates’ Court.[1]
Awards
For his work in the prosecution and incarceration of Kereke, Warara was awarded the Walter Kamba Rule of Law Award in December 2016.[1]
