Musango Safari Camp

Musango Safari Camp, is an exclusive 16 bed, owner-run camp. Just a short flight away from Victoria Falls or Kariba, Musango offers an abundance of both wildlife and bird life, with a large selection of activities available, or the option to simply relax. The camp is on Lake Kariba and situated just off the shoreline of the Matusadona National Park.

Musango - Island Safari Camp

From walking safaris and ‘Big Five’ game drives to tiger fishing on Lake Kariba; our guests can encounter the abundant wildlife in a multitude of ways. Activities are fun, informal and operated by trained and experienced guides.

Whether you choose to fill your day exploring the area, or simply relaxing and soaking up the ambience of wild Africa, our staff is happy to accommodate your every wish.

Main Camp

The Musango main area consists of a double storey viewing platform where guests can relax and view both the rising and setting sun. There are areas to relax both upstairs and downstairs. The ground level provides a shaded lounge area, with adjoining bar and dining room. Upstairs is where we enjoy our morning coffee and light breakfast before heading out on the morning activity. The morning rising sun provides expansive views over the lake.

After your wake-up call, there is a light breakfast in the main lodge and you will return to the camp for mid-morning brunch. The afternoon activity begins between 3.30 and 4.00 pm and includes sundowners with the glorious backdrop of the sun setting over the Lake.

After your day’s activities, you can relax around the campfire, watching the amazing night sky. Refreshments are always on hand and you will be hosted by one of the guides and/or Steve and Wendy. All our guests sit together for dinner (unless they choose not to) and the evening is normally filled with fun, laughter and interesting stories about life in Zimbabwe and close encounters with the bush.

Children

Children are welcome at the camp. As well as the activities on the lake, Musango Island is covered in trees and there is a wonderful path winding through the woods, where they can spot buck and birds in complete safety. There is also a swimming pool, hammock and countless fossils and animal skeletons dotted around the camp for them to investigate. Our staff is very friendly and will always take the time to answer the questions of inquisitive little ones. Bushbuck roam freely on the island and they are a great attraction to the children who can sometimes get close enough to feed them. Every night, the younger members of the family will also enjoy feeding the catfish that swim around the shallows of the lake, in readiness for the nightly feeding frenzy.

Accommodation

The accommodation at Musango consists of six, twin, luxurious safari tents, each with an en-suite bathroom built of natural stone. These tented rooms are set in thick forest and face east over the lake, towards the rising sun.

Musango also boasts two honeymoon suites that have been uniquely designed and built of natural stone, under thatch. Special canvas interiors ensure total privacy. There is a private verandah and secluded, intimate plunge pool to cool off during the hot, summer months.

Safari expiriencies

Safari Walks and Tracking

Accompanied by armed guides, guests can walk in the Matusadona National Park and/or the nearby wildlife sanctuary, tracking and photographing a wide variety of wildlife. Walking through the bushveld is a completely different safari experience when you focus, not only on the big mammals, but also on the importance of the flora and fauna, the insects and bird life and the delicate balance of nature.

Musango was involved in the re-introduction of black rhino into the Matusadona National Park and we delight our guests in tracking the wild black rhino on foot within the Park.

Boating Safaris

Getting out on the water is very much part of the Musango experience. Discovering the many waterways of the area is such a peaceful and relaxing way of getting close to the many animals and birds that inhabit our beautiful sea of water.

Game Drives

Game drives are conducted across the water on the mainland. After a short boat trip, one of our guides will drive you through the bushveld in a classic safari vehicle from which you will discover some of the prolific wildlife surrounding Musango. Game drives are conducted upon request.

Fishing

The main season is from April to October, when catching is a certainty, although fishing on Kariba is a wonderful experience at any time. The famous fighting ‘tiger fish’ is found in abundance in the lake, as well as many other species, including the huge vundu, and delicious bream. We cater for anglers of all experiences: young, old, novice and experienced. Sitting at the end of a line, with a sun-downer close by, wildlife grazing on the water’s edge and the magnificent African setting over the hills beyond, is a memory that will not hastily fade.
