Harare City Council workers to go on strike after 5 months with no pay
Harare City Council (HCC) workers have notified the city of their intention to strike after going for 5 months without receiving their salaries. The workers have given the HCC a two week ultimatum to pay their salaries, failing which they will go on industrial action.
In a letter to Harare Mayor, Benard Manyunyeni, Cosmas Bungu the executive chairman of the Harare Municipal Workers’ Union (HMWU) said:
We wish to bring to your attention that the whole sum of the employees in the undertaking are no longer amused by their continued enslavement at the hands of the Harare City Council. This continued behaviour of stealing employees’ petty wages has been and is still in flagrant breach and violation of Section 6 of the Labour Act (Chapter 28:01)
