Manyenyeni addresses $523 000/year salary rumours
Harare Mayor, Bernard Manyenyeni has rejected claims that he owns $523 000 per year as salary revealing that he earns an allowance of $1250 per month.
Manyenyeni’s revelation follows calls for an investigation by Advocate Fadzayi Mahere, into the ceremonial mayor’s pay following reports that the Town House boss was earning more than 50 times the base government salary for executives. In a Facebook post Manyenyeni wrote:
Dear FB friends,
FeedbackThere is a social media message doing rounds indicating that as Mayor of Harare I earn $523 000 per annum as a salary.
IT IS NOT CORRECT
For the record:
1. I serve as a non-executive mayor and I receive an allowance of $1250 per month.
The “job” is in all fairness FULL TIME….I work EIGHT DAYS A WEEK.
2. This allowance is about one-eighth of my last earnings in an executive position – which I lost because of being mayor.
3. Any other benefits are standard and prescribed by the ministry for ALL councillors in all 32 urban local authorities of which I am also President – nothing more.
The ministerial circular is available for checking.
