Zimra impounds 30 tonnes of donated books, refuses to clear them

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has confiscated 30 tonnes of donated books, that were sourced by the Chitungwiza International Rotary Club from South Africa.

Zimra has held the books for more than 2 weeks and is refusing to release them without the payment of duty. However, The Rotary Club’s past president, Mr Denny Makoni revealed that his organisation has been shipping books from South Africa for charity since 2011, with no problems. He revealed that this was the first time that a consignment had been asked to pay duty.

Said Makoni:

These are part of books we were handing over to primary and secondary schools countrywide

So far, we have distributed some in Midlands, Mashonaland West, Manicaland and Chitungwiza, as we stretch our efforts to promote the delivery of quality education across the country.
