40 Mat. South schools may close as Ministry says it is uneconomical to run them
At least 40 schools in Matabeleland South Province face closure after the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education deemed that it was not viable to run the schools. According to the Ministry, the schools have low enrollment, which does not justify their continued running, with some schools reportedly having as little as 140 total pupils.
Some of the schools that have recorded low enrolment include Elangeni, Phezulu and Mehlo Primary Schools in Insiza as well as Shape and Sisyevale in Gwanda.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr. Slyvia Utete-Masango said the province needed to come up with solutions to deal with the problem.
Update: The Ministry has now backtracked on the issue saying no schools will be shut down.
