Mugabe To Reshuffle Military Generals
President Robert Mugabe is set to make major personnel changes in the security services. This comes after Mugabe reshuffled his cabinet ministers in a move that some analysts described as being based on Zanu-PF factional lines. President Mugabe has already redeployed former Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) director-general Major-General Happyton Bonyongwe. The former spymaster is the new justice Minister.
According to top security sources, Mugabe is likely to promote CIO deputy Director-General Aaron Daniel Tonde Nhepera to replace Bonyongwe.
Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander (ZDF) General Constantino Chiwenga is likely to be removed as he is on a rolling one-year contract. He has already finished his constitutional two five-year tenures. Chiwenga is reported to have displeased Mugabe after he seemed to interfere in Zanu-PF succession politics. He is likely to be replaced by Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) commander Lieutenant-General Philip Valerio Sibanda or Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) commander Air Marshal Perence Shiri.
The President is reported to have initiated a process to send Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Chief-of-Staff (General Staff) Trust Mugova to the African Union (AU) standby force. A source who spoke to the weekly publication, the Independent said:
A lot of changes are expected in the security establishment soon; from the civilian intelligence, military intelligence to the army. Bonyongwe will have to be replaced. Mugova is going on a new assignment to Addis Ababa
