Goods train derails, people scavenge for wheat
A goods train derailed in Mutare on Tuesday afternoon with eyewitnesses saying it failed to negotiate a curve on its way to Harare from Mutare. The goods train was carrying different types of cargo in 12 loaded containers. Seven of the wagons were derailed. Eyewitnesses scavenged for wheat under the train as well as on the sides of the railway track.
National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) spokesperson, Mr Nyasha Maravanyika told ZBC that preliminary investigations show the derailment was caused by failure to negotiate a curve. He said the derailment occurred on the main line linking Mutare to Harare and repair works are expected to be completed this Friday. About 250 meters of rail have been damaged.
