The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Tuesday, 17 September, released the names of the victims of two fatal road traffic accidents that occurred in Masvingo and Rusape on 14 September 2024 where seven people were killed.
Police said a Nissan Serena carrying eight occupants veered off the road and overturned after its rear right tyre burst at around 7:25 AM, approximately 60 kilometres along Roy–Chiredzi Road. Four people lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries.
The names of four victims who were killed in the Masvingo accident are:

<li>Siyano Nyamande (40), a female adult of Crownhill, Borrowdale, Harare</li>
<li>Priscilla Musembwa (64), a female adult of Biddulph, Cranborne, Harare</li>
<li>Memory Kwenda (40), a female adult of Dzivarasekwa, Harare</li>
<li>Epson Nyamande (45), a male adult of Crownhill, Borrowdale, Harare</li>
</ul>
In the Rusape accident, a Toyota Hilux with two passengers was involved in a head-on collision with another Toyota Hilux carrying eight passengers.
The accident occurred at the 60-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road, resulting in three fatalities and seven injuries.
Two of the three victims who were killed in the Rusape accident were identified by their next of kin as follows:

<li>Madekufamba Viginia, a female adult of Mundopa Village, Makoni, Rusape</li>
<li>Kadungure Clement (53), a male adult of Kamba Village, Makoni, Rusape</li>
</ul>
The other victim had already been identified by the next of kin as Chigwese Tendai Amon (52), a male adult of Neshena Village, Makoni.

ZRP Names Victims Of Deadly Masvingo And Rusape Road Accidents

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has urged motorists to exercise caution and refrain from overtaking when it is unsafe, following two tragic road traffic accidents that claimed seven lives in Masvingo and Rusape on Saturday, September 14.
In a statement issued on Sunday, September 15, ZRP Chief Staff Officer for Press and Public Relations, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incidents.
In one accident, a Nissan Serena carrying eight occupants veered off the road and overturned after its rear right tyre burst at around 7:25 AM, approximately 60 kilometres along Roy–Chiredzi Road. Four people lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries.
In the second incident, a Toyota Hilux with two passengers was involved in a head-on collision with another Toyota Hilux carrying eight passengers.
Commissioner Nyathi said the second accident occurred at the 60-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road, resulting in three fatalities and seven injuries. Reads the statement:

One of the three victims was identified by the next of kin as listed:-

7 Killed, 11 Injured In Accidents In Masvingo And Rusape

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Friday confirmed a tragic road traffic accident that occurred on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at around 6:00 AM.
The accident occurred at the 217 km peg along the Harare-Masvingo road.
Police said a UD truck carrying three passengers veered into the lane of an oncoming Freightliner truck, which also had three passengers on board resulting in a head-on collision.
Tragically, three people lost their lives in the accident. Their bodies were transported to Mvuma District Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Two other people sustained injuries and were admitted to the same hospital for treatment.

Thirteen (13) people were killed while more than a hundred (100) were injured in two separate road traffic accidents which occurred on Friday evening in Masvingo and Gokwe.
In a statement issued on Friday, 09 August, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they will release full details on the two road traffic accidents on 10 August 2024. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms two fatal road traffic accidents which occurred this evening in Masvingo and Gokwe where a total of 13 people have died.
In the Masvingo accident which occurred at around 1630 hours, a Chikozho bus which was travelling from Masvingo to Topora along the Masvingo-Zano Road with 105 passengers on board (75 seated and 30 standing) went out of the road while negotiating a steep gradient. The bus then hit a dwala and overturned.
Seven people died while 99 were injured. 65 were treated and discharged for minor injuries at Topora Clinic while 33 who sustained serious injuries were taken to Morgenster Hospital and Masvingo General Hospital for medical attention.
Police officers are currently at the scene.
In the Gokwe accident which occurred at around 1800 hours this evening, a Nissan Sulphy hit a pot hole at the four kilometre peg along Gokwe-Siabuwa Road and in the process had a head on collision with a Nissan AD Van vehicle with nine occupants. Six people died, three from each vehicle.
Eight people were injured, three critically and five sustained moderate injuries.
They were taken to Gokwe General Hospital for medical attention.
The Police will release full details on the two road traffic accidents on 10th August 2024.

Five Killed, Four Injured In Head-on Collision On Harare-Mutare Highway

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on 28 July at around 1.30 PM along the Mutare-Masvingo Road at the 134-kilometre peg.
Police said a Mitsubishi Colt vehicle was travelling along the road when its front right tyre suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The Mitsubishi Colt then veered off the road and overturned multiple times before eventually landing back on its wheels.
The accident resulted in the tragic deaths of three people who were travelling in the Mitsubishi Colt.
Nine other occupants of the vehicle sustained various injuries and were rushed to the nearby Birchenough Bridge Hospital for medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were also transported to the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
In a separate incident on the same day, at around 5:45 AM, a head-on collision occurred along Willowvale Road, opposite the Old Willowvale Flats in Harare.
A Toyota Hiace Kombi, which was carrying several passengers, collided head-on with a Honda Fit vehicle.
The impact of the collision resulted in the death of one individual, while 13 others suffered injuries of varying severity.

3 Killed, 9 Injured As Overloaded Mitsubishi Colt Vehicle Overturns

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on the Harare-Bulawayo highway at the 164-kilometre peg on July 26, 2024, at around 6 PM.
In a statement, Police said two pedestrians and the driver of a Nissan Sulphy vehicle were killed when the vehicle veered off the road and struck the pedestrians who were waiting for transport at the Ngwena bus stop.
In addition to the three fatalities, two passengers travelling in the Nissan Sulphy vehicle were injured in the incident.
The bodies of the victims have been transported to the Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination, while the injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The accident occurred just a day after two pedestrians were killed, and two others were injured when a Nissan NP200 vehicle, which had no passengers on board, veered off the road and struck the victims who were walking along a footpath approximately 70 metres away from the road.
This fatal accident occurred on the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road, at the 103-kilometre peg, on July 25, 2024, at around 7 AM.

Police have confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road, at the 103-kilometre peg, on July 25, 2024, at around 7 AM.
Police said two pedestrians were killed, and two others were injured when a Nissan NP200 vehicle, which had no passengers on board, veered off the road and struck the victims who were walking along a footpath approximately 70 metres away from the road.
The bodies of the deceased victims were transported to the Zvishavane District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while the injured individuals, as well as the driver of the vehicle, were admitted to the same hospital for medical treatment.
In an unrelated incident, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed a serious road traffic accident which occurred at Bradford Turn-off along Bulawayo Road, Harare on the 20th of July.
12 passengers were injured when a Toyota Hiace Kombi registration number AGB 3305 with 20 passengers on board, veered off the road and landed on its left side.
Police said the injured victims were referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on July 21, 2024, at around 7:50 PM along the Ngundu-Tanganda Road.
In a statement, the ZRP said the accident occurred at the 70-kilometre peg on the road, where a Toyota Probox vehicle with registration number AFD 7476, carrying nine passengers, veered off the road and rammed into a bridge pillar.
The vehicle overturned several times, throwing all of the passengers out of the vehicle before it landed on its right side.
Tragically, eight of the passengers were killed in the accident, while the remaining two were injured. Police said:

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/truck-driver-faces-culpable-homicide-charges/">The Herald</a> that investigations were in progress.
According to police, the crash took place on June 25 around 3:30 PM at the 55-kilometre peg on the Masvingo-Mbalalabala Road highway.
A Nissan Note vehicle carrying five passengers collided with a Freightliner truck at the intersection of the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road and the Tokwe-Mhandamhambwe Road.
The truck driver reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign, causing the tragic collision. The ZRP said:

In April 2024, a police officer, Farai Muchandisiye (37), was fined US$200 by the Norton Magistrates Court following his conviction for culpable homicide.
He was facing two charges: (1) culpable homicide, and (2) failing to report an accident to the Police.
Muchandisiye pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to a fine of US$200 or 2 months imprisonment for count 1.
He was sentenced to a further US$100 fine or 1 month imprisonment for count 2.
Culpable homicide is defined by Section 49 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act as the unlawful killing of another person due to negligence or recklessness. The section reads as follows:
<blockquote>
Any person who causes the death of another person –
(a) negligently failing to realise that death may result from his or her conduct; or
(b) realising that death may result from his or her conduct and negligently failing to guard 
against that possibility;
shall be guilty of culpable homicide and liable to imprisonment for life or any shorter period or 
a fine up to or exceeding level fourteen or both.

Haulage Truck Driver Faces Culpable Homicide Charges After Fatal Crash

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has urged motorists to avoid overloading vehicles and refrain from mixing goods with passengers when travelling on the country’s roads.
This call comes in the wake of a tragic accident on June 27, 2024, in which a Nissan UD truck carrying 38 passengers veered off the road, overturned, and landed on its roof, resulting in the deaths of five people and injuries to 26 others.
ZRP spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, stated on Saturday, June 29, that the accident occurred at the 106-kilometre mark along the Karoi-Binga Road at around 7:30 PM on June 27. He said:

Some passengers were thrown out of the loading box while others were trapped under the load.
34 passengers were seated on top of the load which comprised, five tonnes of maize, two grinding meals, assorted groceries and roofing sheets.

The ZRP has released the names of the victims who were identified by their next of kin. They are:

<li>Mwarianesu Tivarasi, a male adult of Mapindu Village, Siakobvu.</li>
<li>Asan Zvitauro (38), a male adult of Shambaropa Village, Siakobvu.</li>
<li>Patrick Maregere (57), a male adult of Kasinamoyo Village, Siakobvu.</li>
<li>Wayne Donono (22), a male adult of Kasinamoyo Village, Siakobvu.</li>
<li>Aaron Chikato (32), a male adult of Mutsoo Village, Siakobvu.</li>
</ul>
Nyathi said the driver of the truck had acted recklessly, and assured that the police will ensure the law takes its full course against such irresponsible drivers as well as the owners of the vehicles involved. He said:

Manhunt For UD Truck Driver After Fatal Accident Leaves 5 Dead, 26 Injured

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on Thursday night at the 106-kilometre peg along the Karoi-Binga Road.
According to the ZRP statement, a UD truck overturned, resulting in the tragic loss of 5 lives. In addition, 26 other individuals sustained injuries of varying degrees. Police said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred last night at the 106-kilometre peg along Karoi-Binga Road. Five people were killed whilst 26 others were injured when a UD truck overturned.

On Wednesday, June 26, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Felix Tapiwa Mhona (MP), said that the recent spate of fatal road traffic accidents serves as a wake-up call for road users to strictly observe traffic laws.
In a statement following the death of 26 people and injuries to 56 others in five separate road crashes across the country in recent days, Mhona said:

Incidences of this nature only serve as a clarion call to all our stakeholders of the road traffic ecosystem, including motorists, operators and passengers to be more vigilant against road traffic violations, especially overspeeding and the use of unroadworthy vehicles…
We urge the nation to formulate rational decisions in making travel choices and prioritize the use of safer vehicles with the right state of mind.
Rational behaviours and attitudes are ingredients of a safer road traffic management regime, where all actors play their part in traffic safety.

Investigations indicate that the majority of these accidents were caused by excessive speeding and the use of unroadworthy public service vehicles.

UD Truck Overturns On Karoi-Binga Highway, 5 Killed And 26 Injured

Five people died while thirteen others were injured in a road traffic accident involving a kombi, a truck and a Toyota Belta at the 37-kilometre peg along Harare-Bindura Road this Tuesday.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the fatal accident via a statement posted on their X page this evening. Police said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred this afternoon on 18/06/24 at the 37-kilometre peg along Harare-Bindura Road.
Five people were killed whilst 13 others were injured when a kombi carrying 18 passengers was involved in a head-on collision with a Man truck with three passengers on board.
Subsequently, the kombi side-swiped with a Toyota Belta vehicle with three passengers on board.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Concession Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.

This accident occurred hardly two days after eight Anglican church members were killed in a bus accident at the 26-kilometre peg along Nyabadza-Gandanza Road on Sunday, 16 June 2024 at around 7 PM.
The pilgrims were returning from their Bernard Mzeki shrine in Marondera when the bus caught fire resulting in eight people being burnt beyond recognition while ten others were injured, three of them seriously.

5 Killed, 13 Injured In Head-on Collision Along Harare-Bindura Road

Two people died while nine others were injured in a road traffic accident involving a Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus and a bicycle that occurred at the 80km peg along Kadoma-Sanyati Road on Saturday.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the kombi, with 8 passengers on board, hit a 9-year-old juvenile who was riding a bicycle.
The kombi driver fled the scene and his whereabouts are not known. The ZRP said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 80-kilometre peg along Kadoma-Sanyati Road on 15/06/24 at around 1330 hours.
Two people were killed whilst nine others were injured when a Nissan Caravan kombi with 18 passengers on board hit a juvenile (9) who was riding a bicycle.
As a result, the kombi veered off the road to the left before overturning and landing on its left side.
The driver of the kombi ran away from the scene and his whereabouts are not known.

Sanyati Kombi Accident Claims Two Lives

The death toll from the Harare-Mutare Road accident has risen from 4 to 5 after one of the 14 injured victims succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
The accident occurred at the 32-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road near Mutangadura on Thursday, 06 June 2024 at around 12.50 PM.
Police said the accident occurred when a Freightliner truck, which was travelling towards Marondera and occupying the outer lane, turned right onto the inner lane, in front of a Tenda bus which was travelling towards Marondera with 56 passengers on board.
The Tenda Bus, which was about to overtake the haulage truck, hit the trailer of the truck before swerving into the oncoming traffic lane.
As a result, the Tenda Bus collided with a Zhong Tong bus owned by Phils and Pats Bus Services which was travelling towards Harare with 25 passengers on board.
On Saturday, 08 June, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said two of the five victims were identified by their next of kin. They are Jerina Nhapi (38), a female adult of Buhera, and Beatrice Chihabvu (38), a female adult of Rusape Hospital.
Police released the names of the other three victims on Friday. They are Kennedy Ngoshi (40), a male adult of Zengeza, Chitungwiza, Plaxedes Kasambwa (36), a female adult of Nyabadza, Rusape, and Monica Katena (54), a female adult of Kuwadzana Extension, Harare.
Comm. Nyathi said the Freightliner truck driver, Pardon Tichaona Sungai (31) surrendered himself to the Police yesterday, 07 June. He said:

Harare-Mutare Road Tenda Bus Accident Death Toll Rises To Five

Four people died on the spot when a Ford Ranger vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Honda Fit at the 48km peg along Mutare-Juliasdale Road on Tuesday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the ZRP said that seven people were injured in the accident and were ferried to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital where they were admitted. Police said:

The ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 48km peg along Mutare-Juliasdale Road on 04/06/24 in which a Ford Ranger Black Double Cab registration number AFK 8349 with three passengers on board, was involved in a head-on collision with a Black Honda Fit registration number AFE 8211 which had six passengers on board. Four people died on the spot while seven others were injured. The bodies of the victims were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary while the injured were admitted at the same hospital.

4 People Killed, 7 Injured In Ford Ranger, Honda Fit Head-on Collision

Four people were killed in a road traffic accident involving two buses and a haulage truck which occurred along Harare-Mutare Road on Thursday afternoon.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said a Tenda bus collided with a haulage truck and a Phils and Pats bus at the 32-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road near Mutangadura. Reads the statement:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred this afternoon at the 32-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road near Mutangadura in which four people were killed when a Tenda bus collided with a haulage truck and a Phils and Pats bus.

Four People Killed As Tenda Bus Collides With Phils And Pats Bus, And A Haulage Truck

Three people lost their lives whilst three others were injured when a Honda Fit vehicle with five passengers on board, side-swiped with a Toyota D4D vehicle along Harare-Mutare Road.
Police confirmed the accident which occurred around 7 PM on Wednesday. Police said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident in which three people were killed whilst three others were injured when a Honda Fit vehicle with five passengers on board, sideswiped with a Toyota D4D vehicle with no passengers on board at the 191-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road on 08/05/2024 at around 1900 hours.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Rusape General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured were admitted at the same hospital.

On Zimbabwe’s roads, an average of five people tragically lose their lives every day due to road traffic accidents. This translates to approximately 153 persons killed each month.
According to road safety experts and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), some of the primary causes of road traffic accidents are vehicle defects, speeding, animals, following too closely, driver fatigue, failure to give way and turning in front of oncoming traffic.

Three People Perish In Honda Fit Accident

The Government has declared the Beatrice road traffic accident which claimed the lives of 16 people on Friday, 26th April 2024, a national disaster.
The declaration was announced on Sunday morning by Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona during an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/beatrice-accident-declared-national-disaster/">The Herald</a> at the accident scene. Said Mhona:

We are saddened by this tragic incident. Government has declared this accident a national disaster. We wish the injured a speedy recovery and we also send our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
</blockquote>
On Saturday, 27 April, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the accident occurred at the 52-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road.
According to him, the accident occurred after an Adolph haulage truck with no passengers on board, which was travelling towards Harare, hit a VW Polo vehicle from behind. The VW polo vehicle was travelling towards Harare with no passengers on board.
The impact forced the haulage truck to veer off the road to the oncoming lane and was involved in a head-on collision with a Mercedes Benz Sprinter which was travelling towards Chivhu with 44 passengers on board.
The passengers were members of Angels Family Apostolic Church who were on their way to Makumumavi Shrine, Chivhu.
15 passengers died on the scene of the accident and one of the 29 injured victims passed away whilst admitted at Chitungwiza Hospital.
By Saturday, Police had identified 11 of the 16 victims of the accident. The names of the 11 deceased persons were listed as follows:

Eleven (11) of the sixteen (16) people who were killed in an accident which occurred near Beatrice along the Harare-Masvingo Highway on Friday have been identified.
In a statement issued this Saturday, 27 April, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the injured victims were admitted at Chitungwiza Hospital, whilst the bodies of the victims were conveyed to Chivhu General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem. He said:

Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s post on the X platform released on 26th April 2024 regarding a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 26th April 2024 at the 52-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road.

11 Out Of 16 Victims Of Beatrice Kombi Accident Identified

Three people were killed while another person was injured when a Ford Ranger twin cab they were travelling in veered off the road before overturning and landing on its wheels in Kadoma, the ZRP has said.
In a statement, Police said the accident occurred at the 166-kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road around 11 AM on Independence Day. The ZRP said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 166-kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road on 18/04/24 at around 1100 hours in which three people were killed whilst one person was injured.
A Ford Ranger twin cab with three passengers on board veered off the road before overturning and landing on its wheels.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Kadoma General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured is admitted at the same hospital.

An average of five people die on Zimbabwean roads every day through road traffic accidents which happen every 15 minutes.
This was said by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) Chief Executive Officer, Munesu Munodawafa when he recently appeared before parliament’s portfolio committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development.
He also said on average, 38 people are injured in accidents daily.

Three Killed As Ford Ranger Vehicle Overturns In Kadoma

Two motorists were victims of armed robberies this week in separate incidents in Harare that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has described as “stage-managed road traffic accidents”.
In a statement, the ZRP said that on April 09, a motorist who was travelling in a Toyota Mark X vehicle was rear-ended by a Honda Fit at the corner of Hurtsview Drive and Lantana Way in Ridgeview.
Three unidentified suspects, wielding a hammer, assaulted the motorist and stole the Toyota Mark X. Police said:

Police in Harare are investigating two separate robbery incidents in which the suspects, who were travelling in a Honda Fit vehicle, stage-managed road traffic accidents before stealing valuables and cash from victims.
In one of the incidents, a motorist travelling in a Toyota Mark X vehicle was hit from behind by a Honda Fit vehicle on 09/04/24 at corner Hurtsview Drive and Lantana Way, Ridgeview.
Three unknown suspects, who were armed with a hammer, attacked the motorist before stealing the Toyota Mark X vehicle.

Motorists Robbed In Harare In "Staged Road Traffic Accidents"

On Monday, April 1, a Passion Link Coaches bus carrying 72 passengers veered off the Mutare–Masvingo Road, resulting in injuries to sixty-two individuals.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident. The injured victims received medical attention at Birchenough Bridge Hospital and were subsequently discharged. The ZRP posted on X:

The ZRP confirms a road traffic accident in which 62 people were injured when a Passion Link Coaches bus with 72 passengers veered off the road to the left before overturning and landing on its roof at the 119-kilometre peg along Mutare –Masvingo Road on 01/04/24 early in the morning. The injured victims were referred to Birchenough Bridge Hospital where they were treated and discharged.

In a separate incident, 14 individuals sustained injuries when an Andile Coaches bus, with 19 passengers on board, veered off the road, flipped over once, and came to rest in a roadside ditch.
The accident took place at the 302 km mark along the Harare-Chirundu Road on March 29, 2024, around 12:38 PM. The bus was en route to Zambia.
Authorities directed three injured passengers to Karoi District Hospital, while the remaining 12 sought medical assistance at Mutendere Hospital in Zambia.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the ZRP spokesperson, emphasized that drivers should refrain from speeding in hazardous conditions.

62 Passengers Injured In Bus Accident

The families of three learners from Penhalonga, who tragically lost their lives in a road traffic accident along Christmas-Pass-Shamu Road last week, have put forth compensation requests.
These requests include US$24,000 and 28 head of cattle. Additionally, by their cultural practices, the families have also requested four goats and two cocks.
According to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/crash-victims-families-demand-28-cattle-us24-000/">The Manica Post</a>, the demands were made before the burial of the minors.
Sylvian (13) and Strive Maponde (nine) as well as Blessing Chisare (nine) were knocked down by an alleged speeding Toyota Fortuner that was being driven by John Dumbura.
The siblings were buried at their rural home in Marange on Friday last week, while Chisare (nine) was interred at Tsvingwe Cemetery in Penhalonga last Saturday.
John Dumbura was expected to appear in court facing culpable homicide charges.
Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s acting spokesperson in Manicaland Province, said the matter will be taken to court once all relevant information, including the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) report, is availed. He said:

Police are still working on the docket, and as we speak, the post-mortem results are already in, but we are still waiting for the VID report.

The Maponde family’s demands for reparation were reportedly handed over to John’s uncle, Shellington Dumbura. The agreement reads:

On the death of Gift Maponde’s two children, we agreed on March 13, 2024 that: (1) for each of the deceased child, the perpetrator pays 14 cattle, and that means it should add up to 28 cattle for the two children. For each child, they also pay US$5 000: that means 28 cattle and US$10 000 as well as four goats and two cocks.

The Chisare family also entered into a similar agreement with the Dumburas and it reads:

For Blessing’s death, we have agreed that Mr Dumbura pays US$ 14,000. Today, he paid US$1 000, leaving a balance of US$13 000.
</blockquote>
Dumbura confirmed that he had reached an agreement with the families of the deceased when contacted by The Manica Post on Tuesday. He said:

I did not argue with them. We accepted what they were demanding. Every place has its traditions, so we just follow what they say.
While we were in Bocha (Marange) where the two siblings were buried, the traditional leader pointed out that they (Mapondes) had charged more than what they were traditionally supposed to.
Their culture stipulates that they should charge seven cattle per child to make them 14 for the two.
The chief also wants three beasts for each child killed, making them six, and a total of 20.

Chief Mutasa said normally, reparations are not paid before the deceased manifests in an avenging spirit, stating what he or she wants.
He added that the demands for money and cattle made by the bereaved family were pure “madness and unlawful”. He said:

What we do in our area is that when an accident happens or when one is killed in such a way, the perpetrator meets all the funeral expenses; that is the transport, food and coffins.
We bury the deceased and then wait for the deceased’s spirit to manifest and make its demands known.
You cannot say when someone has died today, you wake up the next day demanding reparation. That is madness; it is unlawful.

Meanwhile, the Government, through the Department of Civil Protection (DCP), availed the three coffins and hearses to facilitate the burial of the three children and also provided grain.

Families Of Schoolchildren Killed By Speeding Vehicle Demand 28 Cattle, US$24 000

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona, has expressed shock over the tragic road traffic accidents on Friday and Saturday that claimed lives and left many injured.
On March 15, a collision between a Sinotruck and a Toyota Aqua at the 191 km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Road claimed the lives of five teachers from ZPC Munyati Primary School.
The following day, at the 267 km peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road, a City Bus coach struck a donkey and collided head-on with a Blue Circle Bus, leading to 11 deaths and more than 30 injuries.
In a statement, issued on Monday, March 18, Mhona said the two accidents serve as a stark reminder for all stakeholders—motorists, operators, and passengers—to prioritize safety. Reads the statement:

It is with great shock and disbelief that I address the nation on the fatal road traffic accidents which occurred over the weekend.
On 15 March, 5 people were killed when a Sinotruck was involved in a head on collision with a Toyota Aqua vehicle at the 191 km peg along Harare- Bulawayo Road.
On 16 March 2024, at the 267 km peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road, 9 people died and 39 others were injured when a City Bus hit a donkey and encroached into the lane of a Blue Circle Bus leading to a head-on collision.
Our thoughts are with the victims of the crashes, the bereaved families, the injured and the survivors who witnessed the gruesome, traumatic, and dark moment of these accidents.
During this somber period, we call upon the whole nation to commiserate with the affected families, at a time when we wish a speedy recovery to the injured.
We only wish that we do not record further casualties as the survivors continue to receive treatment and care.
The accidents are yet another clarion call to all our stakeholders of the road traffic ecosystem, including motorists, operators, and passengers to be more vigilant against road traffic violations, especially over speeding.
These unfortunate horrific roads were recorded as we approach the Easter holidays, and it is our hope that such occurrences do not recur.
The Ministry rallies all traffic law enforcement agencies, road traffic safety actors, motorists, and road users to collaborate against road fatalities.
We urge the nation to formulate rational decisions in making travel choices and prioritize use of safer vehicles with the right state of mind.
Rational behaviours and attitudes are ingredients of a safer road traffic management regime, where all actors play their party for traffic safety.
As passionate proponents of Road Safety, we wish to assure the nation that the Second Republic is committed to the formulation of robust legal, policy and administrative mechanisms to improve the country’s road safety regime and performance. We continue to urge all stakeholders to ensure compliance with the legal framework.

Minister Mhona Calls For Vigilance After 16 Lives Lost In Kwekwe And Beitbridge Accidents

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of five of the nine victims who tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision near Beitbridge.
ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the incident occurred on Saturday morning when a City bus, carrying 25 passengers, struck a donkey and veered into the path of a Blue Circle bus with 43 passengers on board.
The fatal accident unfolded at the 267-kilometer peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road on March 16, 2024, around 1:20 AM.
Police said seven people died instantly, while two others succumbed to their injuries upon admission at Beitbridge District Hospital.
39 individuals were injured, with nine referred to United Bulawayo Hospital, 12 admitted at Beitbridge District Hospital, and 18 treated and discharged.
The victims’ identities are as follows:
1. Taurai Muketiwa: A male adult employed by Blue Circle Bus Company as an assistant driver.
2. Mudarikwa Netsai (40): A female adult from Chegutu.
3. Rangarirai Mbizvo (43): A female adult from Dulibadzimu, Beitbridge.
4. Miriam Majengu: A female adult from Macheke.
5. Clever Chikare: A male adult from Phase 2 Damafalls, Harare.
The other four victims are yet to be identified by their next of kin. Added Assitant Comm Nyathi:

Police Identify Five Of The Nine Victims Of Beitbridge Buses Collision

In a heart-wrenching incident, five passengers lost their lives in a fatal road traffic accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.
The collision occurred at the 191-kilometre peg, involving a Homan Sino truck and a Toyota Aqua vehicle. The accident took place around 3 PM on Friday, March 15.
The victims’ identities, confirmed by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, are as follows:
1. Tsungirirai Joe (57), a female adult from Garden Compound, Munyati, Kwekwe
2. Mitchel Maticha (22), a female adult from Kwekwe
3. Stabile Nothando Moyo (33), a female adult from Exeter Fitchlea, Kwekwe
4. Everjoice Ngwenya (38), a female adult from Eastend, Munyati Compound, Kwekwe
5. Lesley Mugwidi (29), from Mbizo, Kwekwe.
