Pictures: Mugabe Celebrates Birthday At Home
Former President Robert Mugabe today celebrated his birthday at his Blue Roof residence in the plush suburb of Borrowdale.
Before he was ousted in a military coup last November, Mugabe’s birthdays were marked by lavish parties which were thrown by ZANU-PF, where loyalists would feast on dishes ranging from elephant to buffalo meat. Last year ZANU-PF spent $2 million on Mugabe’s bash just outside Bulawayo. A local bakery donated a cake weighing 96 kg (211 pounds).
State companies and government departments traditionally marked the event by placing congratulatory advertisements in the country’s state-controlled and private newspapers, while office staff would pamper Mugabe with presents. However, Mugabe’s birthday was declared a public and bank holiday, Robert Gabriel Mugabe Youth Day. Former Higher Education Minister Jonathan Moyo shared a picture of Mugabe and his wife Grace Mugabe today.
