Khupe Writes To Govt Demanding $1.8 Million Belonging To MDC-T, Argues That She Is The Rightful Leader
MDC-T vice-president Thokozani Khupe is reported to have opened a new bank account for the MDC-T in order to receive the $1.8 Million which is due to the party. Khupe has written to the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs saying that the money should be paid to her because she is the rightful leader of the opposition party. The MDC-T is owed $1.8 million by the government under the Political Parties Finance Act (PPFA). Khupe has been fighting against Nelson Chamisa’s ascendancy as party president following the death of founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai. Khupe has accused Chamisa of grabbing power through a coup.
Khupe’s personal assistant, Witness Dube refused to comment on the issue, while MDC-T presidential spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka said,
Disbursement under the Political Parties Finance Act is not done to individuals, but to institutions. And the MDC as an institution has just received its money from government. Government does not deal with individuals, but with institutions. The institution as led by president Chamisa has already received part of its share.Feedback
This is the third time rival factions of the MDC-T have fought for State funds after splitting. The first time was in 2005 when the MDC split into Tsvangirai’s camp and Welshman Ncube’s camp. This happened again in 2015 after Former MDC secretary-general Tendai Biti split from Tsvangirai’s party.
