Civil Servants Unions Reject Government's Offer For 15 Percent Pay Hike

Unions representing civil servants have rejected the government’s offer for a 15 percent hike. The unions are demanding more from the government although the unions have said that they are willing to continue negotiations.

Cecilia Alexander of the Apex Council said,

The Apex council, while appreciating this gesture, is still urging Government to improve the offer to a level at or above poverty datum line for the lowest-paid civil servant. The Apex Council wishes to advise its members that dialogue is ongoing until such time when an acceptable deal has been reached.

While Raymond Majongwe of the Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) said,

We last had a salary increment seven years ago and getting a 15 percent increment means we may go for another seven years without an increment. We need to be given something reasonable. The increment given to us will be walloped by charges as it is availed to us in plastic money and this means it is very expensive for our members.
