British Ambassador Refutes Reports That She Was Actively Working For Mnangagwa, Zanu-PF
Outgoing British Ambassador to Zimbabwe has scoffed at reports that she was actively working hand in hand with President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Zanu-PF. Laing who bid farewell to President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House on Wednesday said,
I find it laughable. I have heard these sad rumours. Of course, I am not running this government. I am a diplomat representing my country. The government of Zimbabwe is running this government. I have a relationship with them as the representative of Her Majesty’s government; a constructive relationship based on mutual understanding but, I am not running this government.
We built a relationship based on professionalism, based on trust with the government which is what we need on both sides to listen to each other. I have a good cordial relationship with him and I do not have any problems at that level.
FeedbackThe opposition and some civic society organisations have in the past accused Laing of bias and of backing President Emmerson Mnangagwa ahead of the July 30 elections. Laing has been appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria and will be starting her new role on the 1st of November.
